IBS after heavy lifting?

Posted , 6 users are following.

Have been irregularly suject to IBS over several years. Noted that attacks  frequently  occurr about 24 hours after a heavy gardeningbsession, including heavy lifting of slabs etc. Associated with a feeling of taught stomach muscles and back pain.Usually lasts about 7 - 10 days. Why the connection?

The signals that control the stomach muscles come from the spine. The fact that you have pain in your spine following heavy lifting looks like you might be trapping a nerve. I would see a chiropractor and get it checked out.

Sounds more like a muscular pain than IBS pain. Especially after you get it immediately after heavy lifting. Sounds like you are straining something especially your back. Do you get it when you arnt gardening at all ?

Thanks for reply. I do get IBS symptoms occasionally anyway, but very noticeable that heavy kifting/digging almost always results in IBS like stomach muscle tension, gut disorders, general IBS symptoms, but only after  about 24 hrs after exertion - when I think I have survived well. I have reached the annoying age (74) when I find that I can't walk around with a concrete slaab under each arm anymore.

You shouldn't be lifting concrete slabs at any age !!! I'm 52 and feel 72 right now. I've lost best part of 5 years with this stomach thing going on.

Deep down I think it's something serious, then my logical part of my brain kicks in and thinks I would be skin and bones by now and probably not even here !!

Still doesn't help. I'm still worrying.

I just need doctor to eliminate the nasty stuff so I can deal with whatever it is. But on the nhs in this country these days they don't give a damn. Hence another £200 for a private consultation today. sad

My IBS can normally be triggered by stress and food, lifting item's doesn't really worry me.

But you should get it checked out,no good yust putting it off.

Hi Richard I can't really help explain this for you but I too have noticed a relation to exercise with my IBS. If I sit for a day working my colon feels impacted, and also I have experienced more severe pains when exercising or bending a lot such as in the garden. Am thinking of going back to doc about it as generally speaking other than this my diet seems to have it under control
