IBS and diverticulitis

My father suffers with both IBS and diverticulitis for quite a number of years now. He has gotten advice from different doctors that only contradict either condition. He has tried the majority of over the counter tablets and dietary advice but to no avail. He suffers severely with a swollen stomach and ridiculous discomfort/nausea to the point of him not being able to sleep most nights. I am really worried about him and all advice is welcome. Thank you in advance.

has your father had any tests done to rule out other things? if so managing symptoms is all you can do.

he can get anti emetics on prescription easy enough. anti spasmodics like buscopan and mebeverane will help with cramps, and of course pain relief. try heat on the abdomen, peppermint tea, antacids can help with bloating too.

it is very important with diverticulitis not to get constipated, so stool softener might be needed too.

for diverticulitis there is no set diet, but avoid foods with undigestable 'bits' like nuts, seeds, fruit with pips/seeds, which will irritate the gut, and increase soluble fibre.

has your dad tried the low FODMAP diet? it is very good for bloating in many cases.
