IBS and Excessive Flatulence! Help needed!!

Hi,

I've suffered with IBS for some years now but over the past year I have suffered with on and off flatulence. I can't find anything that helps and it is starting to get me very low.

My IBS has gone through stages. I first suffered with diarrhoea for the first couple of years but this last year has been awful. I have had a large amount of stress and anxiety over the last 2 years and my IBS has made me suffer. I get really low and find this new symptom extremely embarrassing, especially at work and I found myself carry deodorant around!!

I am currently taken probiotics, peppermint oil and activated charcoal. I now have shares in Holland and Barrett!! Lol.

Please can anyone help. Xxxx

Hi Zoe, I have had a lot of problems with my stomach over the last eight years and I am just getting on top of one of those issues which was reflux of faeces smell.

I also had a lot of flatulence during that time, but now I have stopped eating sugar apart from the occasional bit of fruit there is no problem with that anymore.

I will tell you that to give sugar up to that level takes determination but it was a no brainer when I stank of poo.

I will look into this. I don't eat a lot of sugar, only natural sugar and I'm wondering whether that might be a trigger.

It can be so depressing sometimes!

      Thanks for your advice. Xx

I think you will need to start analysing your diet and group certain foods if not windy make a note and continue. Eliminate foods which make you windy and repeat this with all your food. It will take time but hopefully it will help.

i rarely had these symptoms. I went straight to diarrhoea and remained there. Also it helped that I sat next to a window.

    Good luck

      Hi,

I have been looking at my diet and I can't put my finger on it. I shall start removing foods and reintroducing them. I am lactose intolerance and I'm now wondering whether fructose maybe another trigger. Thanks for the advice xx

      Hello

I did not have a trigger food either but noticed eating certain foods meant I did not go to the loo as much and this in turn could lead to illness a week later. My illness seemed to be caused by more of a build up so even without a trigger food playing around with diet worked wonders.

Try ray cutting out fructose and see what happens. This is what I did with all my foods.

This was my main symptom when my ibs started, I only later went to constipation then diarrhoea. The low fodmap diet almost eliminated my symptoms completely. I think you should try it. Oh and if your probiotics are dairy based they may be making you worse.

I've been reading about the FODMAP diet, a lot of people said it made a huge difference. Thanks for the advice, I will give it a go. I've been taking dairy free probiotics as I am lactose intolerance. Xx
