Ibs and laxatives

Hello Anyone taken laxatives for constipation in particular movicol. If so how have you reacted I took one yesterday and within 2 hours had to run to toilet it says they take 1 to 2 days to work. it was loose stools and awful pain. Today I woke up feeling ok ate breakfast did some jobs ate lunch had some bloating and wind. Because I had not opened bowels this morning I took laxative no 2 at 3pm same thing but within hour stools mixture of loose and formed stool awful pain it was has worried me low down in abdomen almost to pubic bone going round in a circle all round lower back. Only just starting to ease. It was horrible. My back has been playing up for months but I do have lower back arthritis. I do also have Diverticular disease but have never had a flare up. Wondering now if there is more to it. Any ideas.

    Hi,

    Sorry to hear about this! I take 2 movicols every single day for my constipation issues. Movicol can cause a lot of gas and diarrhoea sometimes. Unfortunately it will have different side effects to each person. I would see your doctor to discuss these problems with them. They may want to do a colonoscopy to see how your colon looks. I had a colonoscopy done 1 month ago due to chronic constipation problems. I got diagnosed with IBS. IBS can give you a lot of those unpleasant problems!! The pain your experiencing could be internal hemorrhoids, They are very painful!

      Thankyou Simonne30442 for your reply. I now am waiting for a urgent 2week referral to the hospital for possible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. I had a colonoscopy 3 years ago when I was diagnosed with Diverticulosis and internal hemorrhoids ( the ibs was diagnosed some years before this) Last time it turned out ok even though I was terrified. Now same feeling again waiting for the appointment. Feel like life is on hold can't seem to concentrate on anything else. I have stopped movicol and going to try lactulose which I know has worked before even thought the same horrible cramps and gas. GP told me to get back to eating normally so trying. I have a few other health problems and never know what is causing what. Feel very lost
