IBS and peppermint tea

There really is no way of saying this without saying it, for two weeks recently I had daily, well, with the added complication of my prolapsed bowel, every fifteen minutes, frankly awful "stuck halfway" syndrome and was in the end tearful, frustrated and did not know what to do, I am loathe to take laxatives, as despise diarrhoea and how it makes me feel, so reached for my peppermint teabags and after drinking down just one  cup and subsequently daily for five days, now a permanent fixture, well, whatever was disrupting my poor stomach, and I have diverticular as well so the possibilities are somewhat endless, I found some relief, I still had difficulty, but have put up with this for five years and despite major keyhole surgery, but it seemed to help, just one cup a day, and has now become my regime.  Oddly, as I can't bear anything bitter, I actually add half a cow to mine and it still does the trick, just thought I'd share, I think the peppermint soothes the stomach and therefore bowel and relieves some of these very unpleasant symptoms, I am so grateful, don't know if it could help anyone else?  Best wishes, Fiona

    Hi Fiona

I have a question. How did the dr diagnose you with IBS. What were your symptopms. It's been two years that I'm suffering colon pain. But mine is not in the lower part of the abdomen but it is in the upper left side exactly in the part the the colon bends. It burns, the burning goes down to the anus and effects my spinal cord like I feel the burning there too and pressure around the tail bone as well it vibrates and the pain sometimes goes to the back. Sometime I feel pressure in the anus area like when I want to go to restroom. The pressure stays for few days the stops but burning and pain is always there in the colon. During the last two years I had constipation not dierieiah. The constipation was sever hard little balls with pain. But recently I've got better but the burning and the pain is still there. But from level 10 is at constant 3.

I've had two different stool tests to see if there is blood in the stool but thankfully there were not. I had ctscan done but it was before the colon pain and the dr told he doesn't want to expose me to more radiation. Many blood works. The only thing that I haven't done is clonoscopy which I am terrified to do. I don't like to be put to sleep and the only drug that they use recently is propofol.

Does anyone have the same pain?

By the way none of the Drs that I went to could not find what's wrong. Unless I do the clonoscopy.

    Please help

Cathy, please don't be terrified, a colonoscopy is not painful, they give you pain relief as there can be some discomfort, all the nurses are marvellous, usually!! and it is all over and done with very quickly and will help the medics establish what is wrong, I have had a colonoscopy and also two sigmoids which are similar procedures, and still alive to tell the tale.  As for your  question about my diagnosis, that took 18 months as allt he conventional tests were coming back saying well, she is prolapsed but not enough to warrant surgery, then after my keep on complaining, the surgeon agreed to do a hands on examination under anathetic and they discovered I was fully prolapsed and they worked very quickly, i think only a month afterwards i had a ventral mesh retropescy, sounds a lot worse than it is.  From what you are telling me, and I am no expert so I may be on totally the wrong track, but I'm wondering if this could be gallstone related?  It may be worth your asking aobut it in any case, good luck and try not to worry!!  Fiona

Cathy, you are awake for a colonoscopy, at least I was and there was very little pain, well, just minor discomfort, so don't worry.

I do not have the same pain but I have had a number of colonoscopies and never been put to sleep so I do not think it is mandatory but I do believe you should have one due to the strong effect this test can have on your wellbeing. I have blood as you discuss above but doc said colour of blood is more concerning than just blood, dark concern light not so much. That is just for anyone who is panicking.

Hi..I am the biggest coward going had a colonoscopy they can give you a sedative injection which puts you away with the fairies. I even watched on the screen you are awake but are not really aware..It is well worth doing.

I have a very low pain threshold but I am very sensitive to medications.  I had sedation for an endoscopy years ago and got severe depression

within 24 hours and it lasted three weeks. I went private and wasted a lot of money. Ask for the throat spray instead or have a barium enema which is less invasive.

If you do opt for sedation insist that they tell you what drugs they are giving you and get them to list all the side effects, the mild and the more serious ones.
