IBS and THR

I wonder if anyone else has this problem, made

worse by the drugs when I had my new hip 2 weeks

ago. I take no painkillers, only the blood thinner.

it is a test of speed on crutches..

it would comfort me to know I am not alone.

    hi cathie

    Sorry to hear this

You could do without it i know but it is the stress of the operation

Have you got IBS medication with you?

    Hopefully it will settle soon

The only thing which works is 1 Imodium

first thing in the morning.  I can't take painkillers

or anti inflammatories. No one seems to know

a cure. It was started by over prescription of

medication whe I started on the long back/hip saga.

    Hi Cathie

You are not alone as there are a lot of out there to suppot you. having IBS must make your first few weeks recovery a lot more difficult without painkillers. I dont have IBS so Im afraid I cant offer any advice from personal experince but why dont you try posting this on the IBS foum as well. Im sure there must be someone out there with IBS who has had a hip op?

Mean time can you ask your doctor for anyything else that might help you over the next few weeks?

keep in touch and take care

Thank you for your kindness, even though you

are not IBS. We all seem to  adapt  individually

to live with it, and have tried everything medication

on the market, I guess most people have had tests via

gps and enterologists. We cope ok generally, but

crutches cause problems when you have to run.

    Dearest Cathie,

That sounds awful - I mean the "test of speed on crutches" -

DId you have it before or any food that makes it worse ?  did you have it tested to make sure that it is not an infection?

I don't think I have IBS but definitely have more frequent bowel movements of the loose kind redface - I am on Fragmin injections and painkillers ...

    How are you doing otherwise?

yes,you certainly learn how to motor when you

have an attack. Yes, I've been tested, yes I try

to eat the correct things, but there are no rules, IBS

does rule, things that are ok sometimes upset you

other times. Mine was caused by over medication.

I am just over the first 2 weeks, which I feel were

harder than hip 1, when ,like you, I hoped it  would

      be easier.

This is an operation we all needed, and we are all

doing our best to achieve full recovery. We all feel

strengthened by the general positiveness of this

site, and inspirationally we try to give back something.

i looking forward to giving some positive contributions

as I achieve my small goals.

You are not alone.  It's amazing how fast one can move with a walker when motivated.  Imodium a life safer.  Couldn't get them to give me any in the hospital so I had my husband sneak some in.

I also am 'An Imodium a day keeps IBS away' person.

I didn't take them in hospital, as I am always hoping

that some medication will improve my IBS just as

medication started my IBS.. The eternal optimist!

      It does complicate THR, though.

I am glad you posted, it really gave me strength.

I found that I had urinary incontinence, all I get told do pelvic floor exercises and now have to wear panty liners all the time, and of course as ibs it is the stress related

      hi,

you are correct about stress related. The ortho-consultant

told me I was very  anxious, but it's not his hip that's

hurting! An anxious person often has cause to worry.

with this op something seemed to happen each day, and

it builds up within you, though you try not to let it.

      thank you for sharing.

Yes I have had IB and then had 10cm of bowel removed. It solved the IB but not the crutches race! I found painkillers actually helped rather than hindered!

I have learned to modify my foods and don't eat much fibre. Contrary to popular belief isn't good for everyone.

I have read that IB and arthritis are related by both being inflammatory diseases.

      Hello Kikeena,

Our ops were the same day,I think. How are you progressing?

I had expectations of it being easier this time, but it

      wasn't.

I find boiled  potatoes, no gravy, plain food,no spice and

eating early evening are my life.

      Boring items are least irritating.

I don't think they have definite answers.

i am told I have microscopic colitis, because they can't find

      anything.

      thank you for sharing.

    hi cathie,

How soon I forget ---  after my 1st THR I had UTI ... so yeah, making it in time to the toilet with a fresh wound and all that, was a challenge - and right after my 2nd THR I had, what I thought, was some kind of a stomach flu that lasted for about 2 weeks ....

    yigh !!!!  exhausting, isn;t it ?

    it will get better though

Many pills cause diarrheia, that could have been

what happened with you. If it improves when you

stop the pills then you know. I am on blood thinners

for the first month, they could have irritated me.

Yes it will get back to my normal manageable levels.
