Does weight loss typically happen with IBS. I have symptoms of IBS but my doctor is in the process of ruling everything else out first. I currently have no appetite so I eat but not as much as usual. I also don't eat what I normally would because I am not sure what will affect the constipation and make it worse so now I have lost 6 pounds since the last week of Oct. Can weight loss happen with IBS?

it can happen out of fear of eating but not related to anything medically wrong with your intestines as they should still absorb nutrients properly if its ibs alone. For me, i did loose weight when i wasnt sure what my problem foods were and i had fear of cramps and reactions, but thats pretty much the extent of it

Hi Sarah,i lost 1 stone each month because of having ibs and become worried of what food would set me off,so i just ate chicken and salads for a couple of months ,and i had tests galore to see if it was something else..my main problems that i had was coming off citrolopram and 2 weeks later i ended up with ibs and my local pharmacist explain that coming off citrolopram was the reason i got ibs,so my doctor prescribed me with 20 mgs citrolopram and it worked again.However i am not saying this would work for other people.

Hi Sarah, any hint of stress on top of my IBS and that's it my appetite dies. I have to try to stay as calm as possible all the time and spend most days eating things because i have to but I don't want to. I find eating can be really painful and if i can eat and i eat late it leaves me in pain. I am now awaiting a coeliac disease! My IBS has got so bad this year, i have test after test. I do understand i give up this year this one has taken me to my health to the limit!

I am so sorry Sam that you are having to face this. I am currently going through tests myself to figure what is wrong. It causes a lot of anxiety being sick and not knowing what the problem is.

You're not wrong, it drives me round the twist! I feel sore today but ah well that's ordinary for me. This will ease in 2093, when i'm 6 feet under.

Weight loss is not a symptom of IBS. However, if you are stressed and anxious,, have no appetite and are eating less, this will cause weight loss.
