IBS-C to IBS-D - sudden change, is this possible?

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have had IBS C for about 2 years now. Cant find what causes it, think it might be stress.

Takes a lot of laxatives to help me out.

Over the past week I've suddenly changed from constipation to diarrhea - is this normal or a sign of something wrong?

Hopefully someone can help!

Thanks for your quick reply. That's reassuring to hear. Just finding it strange going from one thing to another when it hasnt happened before.

Think I'll go back to low FODMAP.

      Thank you

What you are experiencing is perfectly normal for IBS and very common. IBS can change with time. I have had these sudden bowel habit changes with IBS when it first started because no one could diagnose me and I was very stressed and frightened about that. I also had a sudden change from constipation to diarrhoea when stressed with being bossed by family members and my neighbour. I found it was easily solved with Imodium.

Try Imodium, a food diary and try to stay as calm as possible; stress provokes flare ups.

Rapid bowel habit change is not strange for IBS; anything can happen with IBS. Also try Low Fodmap.

hi sorry but what is ibs c and ibs d. could it be sphincter of Oddi . looks like a bulge or a twist in the bowel. that just might be causing your bowel movements to alternate.

IBS C is irritable bowel syndrome that causes constipation and IBS D is irritable bowel syndrome that triggers diarrhoea/loose urgent stools. One of the major symptoms of IBS, is bowel habits alternating between these two extremes. Some people will get either constipation or diarrhoea but many people fluctuate between the two in response to stress or diet. You can have long periods of one bowel habit change and then suddenly it change to another. It can also happen rapidly.
