IBS Caused by Raw Garlic?

Posted , 3 users are following.

My stomach was fine until I had some raw garlic and then wow bam it has been playing up and hurting so much. Doctor said it was an ulcer (though two others did not agree) and was treated for that and it was fine for abit but then the bad stomach came back.

Garlic can be a big trigger of food intolerance symptoms. If you look up fodmaps diet (avoiding certain carbohyrates based on different sugar groups  - eg. I can't take polyols or lactose), you will see that garlic and onion can be major triggers of IBS symptoms!!

The good news is that once you know what your food triggers are, you can avoid them and avoid the nastier bouts of IBS. I still get random stomach pain from stres or lower doses of foods with my triggers can give me a reaction if I am more stressed but having the information makes it all less scary as it lets you take control back over it smile

Of course, I'm not a doctor. perhaps it could be a stomach ulcer too.

I hope you get it sorted,

Thank you for your input, I do appreciate it. Have been researchng the dangers of garlic and onion and have found that some people can have a bad reaction to it. A few months ago I was given a pasta dish with a lot of garlic in and it made my stomach bad for a while.

Likewise when I took a large dose of biotics the same thing happened a year later. I think it is unlikely though posssible that an ulcer would be cured and then start off again instantly upon eating something so more likely to be ibs. Am going to see consultant tomorrow week for endoscopy? for proper diagnosis.

You're welcome Carmel. I think it sounds like you have a good idea. I find I have come to realise which IBS symptoms are food intolerances/which are just from stress by experience (unfortunately lots of it, but hey at least I'm learning I suppose!). The severity and nature of the symptoms are a giveaway for me.

I hope the endoscopy goes well. I had one before. Whatever happens, try not to (and I know it's much easier said than done) worry about what it might be before you get your endoscopy. Also, make sure you drink lots of fluids when you take the stuff to clear out your system before you get it done. It'll help you not to feel nauseated and it will be easier for them to see the test too. smile

Let me know how you get on! Fingers crossed it's not the ulcer back! xx

In a way I would prefer it is the ulcer back, far easier to deal with and get rid of.

Hi, I have always had a problem with raw onions. I love them, but if I eat them, I get really bad pain in my stomach. I didn't have an ulcer tho. I just can't have raw onions. My body doesn't like them.

I have had an ulcer. There is a big difference :-)

I don't know for sure. Could be. Years ago I read if you sniff raw garlic it can open up your sinuses. I did it, and my sinuses closed right up. Thus I rarely use garlic either. Just because some of these are super foods for many people, it doesn't mean they are good for everyone! :-)

Yes. Some of these things are great but others can be allergic to them or too sensitive for them.
