IBS FOR 11 YEARS! I must share this with you, might help you also

Hello my name is Jennifer, I am 50 years old and a stay at home mom with two children.  I have been suffering from IBS D/C for alomost 12 years.  Colonoscopies, endoscopies, sonograms, pelvic cat scans, blood tests. All normal..tried Bentyl, Levsin, Motrin 800, muscle relaxers, Advil, Vicodin, Xanaax.  You name it I tried to get relief.  After a BM I would get horrible cramps inside my stomach and deep in my pelvic area and lower back.  If those subsides, I would be in some sort of pain and or discomfort ALL DAY LONG.  Until I went to sleep woke up and started all over again.  Diarreha, constipation, gas, bloating and distention ruled my life.  My Neurologis started me on 25 mg of Pamelor, (Nortriptyline) for headache prevention.  Didn't really help much, then one day two weeks ago I was reading some other health forums about how Nortriptyline helped people with IBS.  So I said what the heck let me try to double my dose to 50.  PLEASE LISTEN WHEN I TELL YOU, I feel like a different person. No diarreha, no constipation, no distention or pain all day.  If I have a BM I might get a little crampy, but then I take the two Nortriptyline capsules and within  30 min I feel normal.  My stomach feels normal, I forgot what that was like.  It has changed my life, my mood, my outlook and energy level.  Please give it a try if you are suffering like me.  Please let me know who of you out there is suffering. I would love to hear your story and maybe I could help you too.

But if you don't suffer from headaches they probably won't give it to you right

Hi Shelly, I don't think you would have a problem getting this med.  It is not a controlled substance/narcotic.  It is used for depression, and pain. So this is the perfect time to ask your docs to perscribe it to you. I truly hope it can help you the way it helped me..please keep me posted..feel better!wink

I wanted to cry when i read your post. Jennifer you are the only person who has the same problems that i have lived with for a few years. I do not think i have ever read of someone who AFTER a BM  has suffered paniful and i mean painful cramps and lower back ache etc. Just to know that i am not the only person NOT to get reiief AFTER a bm has really amazed me. Although i would not wish this problem on anyone it has helped me mentally. I do have ibs and diverticular and for a few years i have been taking Clonazepam and Venlafaxine and for the last couple of months Librax. I have cut down to a maintenace dose of the first two ut i take 2 or 3 Librax daily. This medication does not work anymore although it did not do much in the first place but i am afraid to stop just in case it would actually make the pain even worse. Like you i an suffer on and off all day and when i finally sit down in the evening it will go after a while. I never get any pain in bed only after a BM. In desperation i have just begun to go to a Naturopath and i am just startes taking a combination of supplements which he has had a good rate of success with other paitients with IBS etc. But i have just googled the drug Nortriptyline and i am excited by the effects it has had on many people. So i will give these supplements a go and if after sometime i find they have not helped when i see my doctor i will mention this drug. I do have stress and anxiety problems since a child but i can manage these and they do not affect my life. The only thing that does is this Gremlin inside me. So thank you so much you have given me hope.Sue wink xx

Hello Jennifer hope you are well. I had an appointment at the doctors who is a psychiatrist and i have been seeing him for about 5yrs.now.He is wonderful and very understanding and he has got to know how my ibs and diverticular disease has caused me much stress and anxiety.I do need to add since a young child i have had anxiety but that is another story i will not bore you with. Well i picked up my prescription today for Nortriptyline 25 and i have to take one tablet before bed time. The tablet i was taking before bedtime is called Venalafaxine 75mg which from today i have to take lunch time. I was taking Librax one a day for some time but they did not help at all so  have now stopped these. Ilive in Cyprus and if the ordinary GP thinks antidepressant may help with my ibs diverticular then you have to see a psychiatrist to get the appropriate medication but as you know it is a very long progress in finding medication that can help you. So i will give these little red/orange Nortriptyline 25 a go tonight and fingers crossed the will help. I expect they may take a time to work? But Jennifer even if these little pills turn out to not have helped me i will always remember your kind reply to me and the fact we share the same symptoms. My very best wishes Jennifer, Sue xx

Hi Jennifer. I read your post with great interest. I am currently off work since may with all day pain like you, daily diarrea & 5-8bowel movements a day. i currently take cocodomol in large doses which only take about 2points off a 1-10 scale of pain & slow my bowels a little. they make me even more tired when i take them. i have controlled colitis, ibs-d, bile acid malabsorption & fructose malabsorption - all under control with meds & diet & probiotics. since may I've had a positive calprotectin stool test(high inflammation), negative coeliac test, a normal colonoscopy except another polyp was removed, a normal contrast mri on my small bowel, & currently awaiting results of a pillcam endoscopy of my small bowel. my symptoms rule my life completely at present. if my pillcam results dont show anything, & there is no further tests my consultant can do to get to the bottom of my current chronic symptoms, i may mention this drug to him. if i cannot be treated or accurately diagnosed, then my only option is meds to relieve symptoms which the nortripyline seems to have done for you. thankyou so much for posting this info, as it gives me something else to perhaps try if i reach another dead end with my pillcam results. xxx
