About 2 years ago i was taking a trip on holiday with my pal which i had done numerous times before and as the plane was in the air i got a sudden shooting pain in my belly and backside and the immediate urge to go to the toilet.. ever since its completely changed my life as the feeling has never permanently left.

For the past two years ive put everything on hold and i cant see it getting much better, i cant leave my house without needing the toilet ive had to stop working playing football and other activities due to this. Oh and i also havent left my city since too. Ive been trying new things for months i.e working out/diet began jogging again and lost plenty of weight "needed". I can go out but there MUST be a toilet near. The symptoms brought on anxiety, panic attacks very rarely but it does happen.

(Im only 22 and finding it difficult to see the positives) Doctors didnt know what it was now ive had several tests done its ***IBS*** i've taken medicine like omeprazole lanzoprazole mebevrine ranitidine and now currently been put on probiotics, none seems to help hoping the probiotic does. I just want to have somewhat of a normal life again and get back on track.

Always fighting the urge. Does it get better, Can anyone relate?

Have you tried the Low FODMAP diet?

I can sympathise with you. Prior to following Low FODMAP my symptoms were very similar to yours, and although I still have occasional flare ups my BS is pretty much under control for the majority of the time. Well worth giving it a try.

I've had the diet recommended from Doctors never tried because I always seen it as a problem which wasn't IBS. Now I know it is I'm at the trial and error stage, praying I find a way to over come this regardless I will not let it beat me. I just wasn't sure if there was a positive outcome for anyone who's had this or has it. Thanks very much for the reply. I'll speak to my GP about this.

    Hi al10669

I can totally relate, I've been the same as you for nearly 10 years now. I'm 39, 40 next month.  I have good days and bad days but the panic of needing the toilet never leaves me and I feel so much better/safer/less anxious if I go somewhere where there's a toilet there/nearby just incase. I seemed to be doing ok for a good while but suffering  the loss of my Mam and my dog in the summer within 5 days of each other has really set me back and I'm struggling a lot more lately. I try and control it as much as I can with Imodium, which isn't ideal but I want to have some kind of a normal life at times. I'm currently taking Buscopan and peppermint oil capsules as directed by my doctor so trying them at the minute. Hope you managed to get some answers and some better days where you feel more normal. I find this forum really helpful with recommendations and support. It does help me feeling I'm not alone suffering with this.

First of all I want to say I'm very sorry to hear the passing of your ma, I couldn't imagine the fight you're going through and to lose a pet/dog is gut wrenching too especially if you're a dog lover like myself.

I'm also a fan of Imodium use it on most anxious journeys and sometimes just day to day, buscopan helped me for a couple of months then wore off but I can assure you there are stronger tablets which do help if that fails..

Looking to see if anyone has beaten this too or can still go to work and nights out on a regular basis, it's a terrible predicament to be in, I even asked the nurse at the hospital for a colostomy bag so I could get bk to some normal reality lol.

Thanks for taking the time out to reach out it's grand to know I'm not alone but I hope you have some good fortune in the coming months. Apreciatted.

There are lots of positives for you.  Try the Fodmap diet, and a food diary. Take Imodium or codeine to control diarrhoea and try distraction techniques such a hobby to to take your mind off your symptoms. Try Buscopan instead.  It is much milder on the stomach than Mebeverine which is known to cause stomach disturbance.

Doctors took three and a half months to recognise my IBS but once it was identified, I felt immediately better and have very few flare ups. I try to avoid stressful situations and keep Buscopan and nurofen handy.  I am able to live a normal life. Occasionally I need imodium if my IBS causes diarrhoea.

I can't really offer any advise and this is an old thread but I'm also 22 and going through the same thing and just wanted to reassure you there are other people that understand what you're going through. The only thing that ever helped me is cutting out sweetners and I still get flare ups even though they're no longer daily. Sending love!

i feel you! im 22 and have had IBS for 4/5 years. i also suffer from non epileptic seizures. i normally alterante between constipation and loose but its always been under control. 2 months ago i had a seizure and my life changed. within 3 weeks id lost 2 stone. ive been in hospital for 2 weeks and they keep sayings its just ibs. my life is completly ruined and i cant see it getting any better. The pain of an attack causes seizures and i cant leave the house. i have to wear adult nappies and my poor boyfriend has lost the girl he fell in loved with. i feel so helpless and the fact the drs have said to just get used to it is heartbraking and causes anxiety in iteslf.

hope you all find some peace in not being alone and if you have any tips to get my

IBS has really shaken me. If I am stressed I know I must get to a toilet. I carry a complete change of clothes. I try to work with Loperamide and Buscopan and if desperate Lactulose.

However there is a TV series Know your S**T and inside your gut. They have been looking at different ways to help this problem. The gentleman has a bucket in his van and I am in the same situation. However they have suggested hynosis and this is medically recognized now as a treatment for IBS. After six weeks he felt much more confident. Another lady suffered from stress another contributory factor. I also feel very weak after passing bowel movement. Wil try the food diary. Hope this might help. I would go to a clinical qualified hynotist.

you may have food intolerance..try to avoid gluten or dairy for few days and check if the sysmtomps are getting better..also you can ask GP to perform stool test and if they can find any parasite infections...i had similar problems for past 3 years dont lot of medication which will only help to reduce the overlay issues not the underlay cause..so try to find the problem which triggers the IBS it can be anything coffee, alcohol etc...you need to avoid specific food and observe

can you or have you ask for pin prick allergy test? you'll then rule out allergies rather than just ibs. ibs is tramped out of doctors mouths, or specialists left right and centre. it could be anything and not just ibs! i got told i had ibs and i have since discovered i am coeliac, i had to swap doctors surgery to get my diagnosis. rule out everything else before you accept your diagnosis of ibs, it may not be the case....
