IBS or stomach bug

Hi everyone,

So yesterday morning I had a migraine come on. It got a bit worse by the afternoon, and in the evening I ate my dinner, but struggled as I didn't really feel very hungry. About 45 mins after my dinner I started to feel really sick.

I went to the toilet and was a bit constipated and passed a very solid stool. Straight afterward I vomited. I thought it might have been the migraine that made me vomit, as I used to have vomiting very badly with my migraines (although haven't been sick with one for about 7 years).

This morning I woke up and passed more solid stool (like rabbit droppings - sorry if that's too much information), and then passed a couple more stools like this throughout the day. I haven't eaten much today as still feeling a little delicate. I've just had toast in the morning and egg and rice for lunch.

However, just now I had sharp stomach pains come on all of a sudden - went to the toilet and passed a formed stool followed by diarrhea. Now I'm worrying that I've got a stomach bug instead of the migraine causing the sickness. I have IBS so often get diarrhea, sometimes it is after a solid stool.

I was just after some advice though - surely if it was a stomach bug, wouldn't the diarrhea have come on at the same time as the vomiting (which is usually how it happens for me), and that this bout of diarrhea might just be my IBS? Or do stomach bugs sometimes come on like this? Vomiting and then a day later diarrhea?

Sorry to hear you're feeling unwell

It could be that you are suffering with ibs at the same time as having your migraine. Doesn't necessarily mean the two are related, but more they're happening at the same time.

If you were a bit constipated, or struggling to pass stools, then what had backed up was just wanting to get out. The sickness could be linked with either. Migraine can definitely cause sickness. Ibs constipation, can also cause sickness. I have experienced this in the past

I hope you have a quiet evening and feel brighter in the morning. It's always a worry. Gentle diet. Maybe some peppermint or ginger tea? Xx

      Hi Kit Kat,

Thanks for your reply. That's what I wanted really - just some reassurance that it might not be a stomach bug (as I've got a bit of a phobia of stomach bugs, and worried about not making it into work tomorrow). 🙂

I took imodium almost every day last week (the last time I took it was on Friday morning), and I had been experiencing pains in my upper stomach, just below my ribcage for a few days, up until Sat lunch time when it eased off. I think Then imodium may have caused this. Then i ate my dinner, and had the vomiting came on not long after.

I very rarely get constipated, so I think maybe not having much of a break from imodium caused it, and I also read that migraines can cause constipation as they cause your digestion to slow down, which also causes the vomiting.

I've got my fingers crossed that it is just a coincidence that it's happening around the same time. It would seem a bit strange I think for a stomach bug to cause vomiting on sat evening, and then to get diarrhea late on Sunday afternoon. Previous times when I've had stomach bugs, it all tends to come on at once, or at least within an hour or two of each other. And I didn't take imodium since Friday morning, so I think the effects of it would have eased off enough by sat evening for it to not have stopped diarrhea thay evening if it was coming - if you know what I mean.

Thanks again for your reply..I really appreciate it. x

Bless you hun. I can totally sympathise. I have phobia too of stomach bugs and vomiting etc. It's very hard having ibs. I too rely on imodium a lot. It does back you up and I imagine it's just your body trying to adjust. Really hope you feel better soon. Xx

You may have had a stomach bug which was made worse by IBS.  Stomach bugs don't always follow the same pattern every time.

      Hi Sam,

Thanks for your message. Monday morning my stomach settled - no more D, so I think it was just a coincidence that I was sick with a migraine, and then had an IBS flare up the next day.

It's been about 7 years since I have vomited with a migraine, so it took me by surprise a bit. Hopefully it was a one off, and I won't start being sick with them all the time now.

Thanks for your's and everyones messages and feedback. I really appreciate it.

Hope everyone is coping ok with their IBS. xx
