IBS. Pain in Hips, Pelvis, Lower Back. Help!?!

Posted , 9 users are following.

Hi so I may or may not have IBS, I'm waiting on tests at the moment, but my doctor thinks it could be.

I've had a 'flare up' of some kind of gastro problem (which has been put down to acid reflux), which does seem to be going now, however I've been left with a pain in my hips, pelvis and lower back. Feels muscular. Also when I wake up in a morning my hips/buttocks are sore and slightly numb? Does this sound like it could be IBS. I do also have PCOS and suffer with irregular periods, I started a period last week so could it be something to do with that?

Any remedies you could recommend for this would be brilliant, had it around a month now, worried about it at the minute.

Dear Laura, I had that too. What happened was I had my womb taken out but not my ovaries. Then they don't have anything to hold onto and the right one was killing me.

Also your digestion will affect it also. It took 8 years so ask doctor to give you a scan internal and external at the same time. I found out that scans can only detect certain things. My back and sides were killing me as well. Also when your hormones drop at the end of a cycle you need to have the right combination of HRT if you need that. My pain was sorted by going on sugar free and gluten free diet but I am coeliac. Your digestion goes up the shoot a bit at the end of every cycle so the sorting out your tummy really helps. You are less bloated so it is less painful.

I'll be in the doctors this week so I will Definately mention this, thanks Maggie. It's very strange it's not terribly painful - it's just a dull ache and it hurts when I move my leg a certain way, kind of feels like a pulled muscle. Putting heat on (hot water bottle, hot bath) does ease it, I'm going to try some ibuprofen gel and see if that helps any. X

I've NEVER suffered with period cramps either up until this period I had, it was terrible! which has got me thinking it's something to do with that, I came off 2 days ago though and I'm sure you can't have 'after period cramps' lol x

Hi there, I have these symptoms also along with many others and have been diagnosed 3 times as IBS. I have just changed doctors and awaiting an appointment as I just can't see this is IBS. I have flare ups of burning in the stomach, heartburn and indigestion. I also have the pain in lower back and hips but thought this was down to age and the sport that I have played. I also don't eat as much as I once used too. Once I have all tests done such as endoscopys I will feel a little more less anxious. Take care and all the best. J

I'm in the exact same boat as you, everything you have just described - the heartburn, burning in stomach, hip pain, indigestion has all been happening to me! Touch wood most of it has died down except the heartburn and sore hip. When you find out if you could let me know how you got on if be very grateful - and I will you, I should be having an endoscopy in around 2/3 weeks so I'll let you know what they say X

Laura, make sure you get the right type of endoscopy. An upper GI is no good for detecting coeliac disease but it might be a hiatus hernia and make sure they take a sample for H pylori which is an infection. They didn't even do that with me and I also had that.

      Hi,

You really need to eat more. It also has to be the right stuff for your digestion. Your stomach acid has nothing to work on if you don't eat enough and you have to stay full for most of the day. Good luck 🍀

I've had the burning sensation for almost a year now on and off but getting more frequent lately. Comes on any time for no reason. No foods or drinks bring it on. Really gets me down and don't feel like doing anything. It affects the way I am with my wife and child as I get down and irritable. I used to be so active and outgoing but the sensation is so bad. I don't plan anything now in fear of feeling this. We are going to Florida in September but can't get excited. I really hope I find something that helps or the dr sorts something.

IBS can cause burning sensations along with the other symptoms you are having.  If you are anxious, these symptoms will worsen.  If you have been diagnosed with IBS 3 times, your doctor must be confident in his opinion.  I get the indigestion, heartburn, stomach pain, hip and back pain along with bowel habit changes.   I too couldn't believe I had IBS because it seemed too simple.  I thought it had to be more complicated. Once I had accepted the diagnosis, my symptoms reduced and my panic disappeared.

It seems to me that diagnosing IBS is not an exact science.  I posted on here to point out that none of the medical professionals I was seeing even suggested my lower back/ coccyx pain was related to IBS.  So was interested to see posts on here claiming that tail bone pain was a symptom of IBS.  When I saw the consultant to check if I had cancer she referred me on to the muscular skeletal team who passed me on for physiotherapy.  The pain is better but I still find it painful to sit for long periods and have a cushion for the car, for sitting at home and take it to restaurants, etc.  the best cushion is one like an egg box.  I do think the lower back exercises the physio gave me help a little so I remain unconvinced that my back pain is related to my IBS.

I'll see how I get on at the gastroscopy and if to no avail I will mention physio to my doctor. Seems to me that diagnosing IBS is a doctors easy way out when they either can't be bothered, or don't have a clue x

lve also had lower mid back pain, also lower hips under butt and into top of thighs at back and side. Mine seemed to start following csection, but as l later had intersticial cystitus diagnosed thought it do do with that, but meds have helped the typical ic symptoms, still the lowe back hip upper leg pain persists, often worse when in bed at night, like a nagging pain affecting sleeping, l used ibuprofen gel, helps a bit, as do heat pads.l do have ibs and a bit of gastritus diagnosed wit typical symptoms bloating belching food intolerance bouts, prescribed omprazole which helps with that,  but sceptical the pelvic is to do with it, ibs seems commonly diagnosed for numerous symptoms. l wonder if its nerve pain, as l often get jumpy leg with it, and maybe nerve affects can be caused by many different things.  Hope you get answers and post them good luck

I have lower back pain, buttock, lower bowel and tailbone pain with IBS. I have pain before and after a BM all affecting the lower back. I have been to the osteopath, do pilates classes and I have had blood tests and bowel cancer tests in the last six months. Im not showing classic symptoms of anything worrying. But I am so fed up with this discomfort. Like you I cannot sit for long and with my job computer based its all very uncomfortable. It really is a miserable condition...

Do you get stomach pain, constipation, loose stools, incomplete bowel movements and nausea?  I got diagnosed with IBS after having these symptoms for three and a half months.   I also have had hip pain, rib pain, back pain and heartburn. Anxiety also goes with IBS.

I take Buscopan and painkillers when I have flare ups. Most of the time the pain is mild and bearable.  If all your tests are negative, IBS is diagnosed.

Not really, I have had loose stools these last few weeks but I've put that down to the tablets and gaviscon im taking as it is seems to have settled down. I am bloated, but other than that I'm not having any of the other troubles. Fingers crossed the camera shows something so it can be fully sorted. I do have anxiety which I know isn't helping but it's hard to get it out your mind when your feeling a bit crap. Hopefully I'm over the worst now X

      Hi Philippa,

No I didn't have loose stools. Only at the end of a cycle. It took me a long time and I had to bite the bullet and go for a gluten and sugar free diet. Gluten because 2 of my sister's are coeliac and doctor can't be bothered with diagnosing it properly because it costs for the right tests. I eat lots of puddings with fruit, but no added sugar. I would not go back. I had good skin already but it is really great now. Good luck 😊

Try not to worry. I know its not easy, but you will get there. Even if you have to cover every aspect of what is affecting your tummy. It can't be done in a day. It took me 8 years and I am sure it won't be that long. Listen to your body. Challenge your doctor in a nice way and do your research based on scientific research. Maggie x

My stools got loose while waiting for diagnosis because I wasn't getting help.  Then it reverted to constipation/normal.  My symptoms began before my period so I put it down to that.  However, your hormones can affect IBS and this is why you can feel worse during your period. Bloating can also be a sign of IBS.

However, you should also get an ultrasound to check for ovarian cysts if you haven't had one because bloating can also indicate gyno problems

I have all the pain in the same areas that you have described. Oddly, I have a normal bowel movement every morning like clockwork, but I have been told that you can have IBS and still have normal bowel movements. I was scheduled for an endoscopy and colonoscopy but they cancelled due to covid. So now I will have to wait until the virus is less prevalent, but that may be a while as I am in FL. My symptoms will go away for sometimes close to a week and then come back. I also get a tight band pain around my waste at times. It is all so confusing. I have had abdominal ultrasound, CT scan of abdomen, blood work and urinalysis, that showed nothing except for some cysts on my liver, which would not account for these crazy pains.

I also experience a lot of these symptoms ans has been ongoing for almost 3 years and have had so many test. I've had a few think IBS but I'm still not 100% convinced. I go back to my internist in Sept so well see what they say then 😒
