IBS Painful

Hi All,

The worst part of what I am feeling is the excrutiating pain. I have had it for over two months now everyday! It's dibilitating because the pain is so strong I am crabby and non functional. Yesterday the doctor diagnosed me with IBS (just because he couldnt find anything else) and he prescribed me Dicyclomine. I dont know if my body has to get used to it but so far its not working. I would do anything to find a way to eliminate this pain in my lower right abdomen. I am not a pill person but I have had to take Tylenol everyday now for the last two months. It's the only way I can function. Is anyone else experiencing these sharp pains?

You will need to give the medication more time to work if you were only diagnosed and prescribed medication yesterday.  That isn't long enough to judge whether or not it is working. Your body will need time to adjust. I would give it a week.  If you are getting no relief and or reacting badly to the medication after this period, ask your doctor for something else.  With IBS, you may have to try several medications. Sharp, stabbing, dull, deep grinding and sore to touch pain is typical wih IBS.

My IBS went on every day for three and a half months before it was diagnosed. I was on Nurofen regulatly to take the edge off the pain.  It never really got rid of the pain so I stopped the painkillers and learned to tolerate it.  When I got my diagnosis, I tried Buscopan which is very mild and worked.  I was initially tried on Mebeverine which I couldn't tolerate.

Thank you for your reply. So you are doing ok with the Buscopan? You can function relatively normal?

Most of the time my pain is under control.  It tends only to flare up when stressed.  Buscopan does help to reduce the pain.

Sounds like trapped gas. Which is one of the symptoms in IBS. Do you have diarrea or constipation. If you are having gas pains try taking gas x

Unfortuantely, muscle spasms are probably the worst part of IBS. Sometimes the pain is enough to make you want to jump out of a window. In my case, the pain medication really didn't do much. I guess the reason was because the pain was so infrequent that many times I didn't need to take it. However, for those days when the pain did come, by the time the medicine did anything, the pain have did a number on me after about an hour or two.

To be honest, wasn't able to control the pain, until after I was able to control my explosive bowel movements, via diet and immodium. It's a life long process my friend. IBS requires a lot of patience, and a lot of endurance.

Thank you for the reply. My pain is almost constant. I cant function without taking something and I am not a pill person at all. I never used pain meds my whole iife unless absolutely necessary. Now I am taking tylenol every day several times a day. There has got to be something I can do to get rid of this or make it tolerable. I didnt have it my whole life so why now all of a sudden.

No problem. Understand though that although I've been told by many doctors that IBS does NOT progress in to something worse like colitis for example, as we get older it can become harder to manage as we get older (for obvisous reasons). Having said that, I understand your position on medication, but I have learned that their are times when you just have to take them, and sometimes quite often. You're not a bad person for taking meds, it's just for whatever reason, you need something stronger to help you manage your symptoms.

Now, in terms of the pain, I don't think No problem. Now, in terms of the pain, I don't think Tylenol would really work for you pain. You'll need an anti-inflamatory like ibuprofan.
