IBS relief??

Posted , 4 users are following.

I seem to have diarrhea every single day at least twice and sometimes 3-5 times before it subsides.  I decided today to eliminate cream in my coffee??  (Can’t quite give up the caffeine yet).  I’m looking for recommendations for types of peppermint capsules to get and probiotics as well.  I’m getting ready to take a rather long plane trip at the end of the month and already have anxiety about it. My doc has given me some (Temporary) anxiety meds along with lomotil but when I took lomotil a week ago it made me terribly nauseated......any advice is appreciated.

Look at your diet, increase the bulk carbohydrates like potatoes, bread and pasta, they may help with your stool. If you drink milk, milk goes quite solid in your tummy that may help

You can check various alternatives on NHS CHOICES web page

THanks for reaponding.  I am looking still the FODMAP diet ?  Seems you are are telling me more carbs???    I am willing to try anything!!

Try the low Fodmap diet or a food diary. I can’t comment on peppermint because it disagrees with me.  Try Imodium or codeine for diarrhoea or rice or bananas. I wouldn’t bother with anti anxiety meds because they can cause nasty side effects.  Try distraction techniques instead such as hobby or meditation. Light exercise will also help.

Don't want to add to your flying angst but when i am in my IBS D mode and I have to fly, I am a wreck. I know just how you feel.  I never ate anything when i was doing a lot of flying and having the diarrhea.  Or, talk to your doctor about taking some Immodium.  Be careful though, you don't want to switch over the IBS C (constipation).  When I am in IBS D mode, I am in the bathroom the minute food touches my lips....it's very frustrating.  Worse thing you can eat is dairy, especially if you have a lactose problem.  Cut out fatty foods too, as in fried anything...chips, french fries, and also I will throw in fructose laden foods and drinks. That might help. When I had to go to my nieces graduation from college, I took Immodium and it stopped the diarrhea, otherwise there was no way I could attend.

I agree Anna...Flying is the worst.  .  In the past, I start taking Imodium the night before, don’t even as much as take a sip of water, and still have to take several immodiums the morning of.  The most stressful part for me is the tram ride  from the car to the airport. I think I’m going to have my husband drop me off this time. I know it will be a hassle, but it may help calm my nerves.  Plus the doc has given me lomotil to take instead of Imodium this time.  I never used to be this way...flying was something I used to look forward to ...have not idea what has happened.  I have 3 weeks until I fly...I am on a quest to eliminate some things from my diet in hopes that my situation will be improved by then.   I’m beginning to recognize dairy is a problem for me ...I will eliminate some of the other foods you mentioned as well.  Thanks for the advice....!

I always fly jetblue and pay extra for a seat in the first 2 rows because I want to be near the bathroom.  The back of the plane is an option also because that's near the rear bathroom. Watch out taking too much Immodium though because it can throw you into IBS with constipation.  I saw my Gastroenterologist the other day and she told me to try taking a Colase every other day when I am in IBS-C mode and I think I will.  People have no idea what so ever how difficult it is when you have this condition. Traveling is impossible and you have to figure out where every bathroom is and how far away, etc.  It is such a pain.  I scope everything out ahead of time.  I can't even go shopping when I have an attack of IBS-D.  The grocery store is even a challenge.
