IBS sertraline.

Hi I have been suffering from IBS for a few years now. Very badly in 2015/16 but seemed to settle last year with only a few flare ups thst lasted 2-3 days. At the beginning of March this year I had a sudden flare up. I had drunk a strong coffee which I hardly ever drink and think this along with the stress of a 3 hour drive home in the snow may have bought this on. Anyway this bout of ibs went on for 5-6 weeks with severe pains almost every day. Work was very stressful, homelife got awful as was very irritable towards family so in the end it took its toll and I had a mini emotional breakdown at the doctors. I was prescribed 50mg sertraline and am currently on day 6. The first few days were hell. No appetite (lost a stone) no sleep, anxiety, diarrhea, my stomach was extremely painful. Then suicidal thoughts came into my head, then guilt of all the nasty things I have done in the past. Mornings are worse as I feel so nervous. Nervous stomach, tight chest, the whole world, places and people seem different like a dream almost. Hope this gets better as I felt panicky as my wife was rushing about getting ready for work and trying to get the kid ready. I have been signed off for 2 weeks but dread going back. Hope this gets better for mine and my family's sake.

Hi Jammyc
I am on day 13 and I'm keeping a diary on here (search Sertraline Diary). The first 8 days for me were hell, maybe just a touch better this week. I personally know 5 other people who are on or have taken Sertraline and all of them swear it gets better in time. I have all your side effects (except IBS) and guilty feelings etc. I have been told that it will probably take longer than 2 weeks to feel better, I would suggest trying to get signed off for longer if that's possible, for your peace of mind.
Good luck, I find it helps to post on here.

Hi popwop. Yes I'm very up and down. There's a lot of time to think so trying to keep busy is hard. When I get a good few hours feeling I think yes this is working then I'm on a downer and back to square one. What I am noticing is just slowing everything down and not getting stressed which doesn't help my ibs.

Hi Debra. Definitely the first few days. I was looking at my daughter thinking are you really mine and for a minute didn't recognise her. Very scary. Just trying to stay positive. It's amazing how just stomach pains have got me to here.
