Hi I have ibs been doing fodmap diet for 10 days taking peppermint tablets drinking 2ltrs water per day  I have been having more than 2 pieces of fruit per day which according to the Monash University app only 2 pieces fruit and 5 veggies per day I have 2 slices schar gluten free wholesome salad and meal at tea.

What am I doing wrong?  How long does it take for bloating to go?  It’s very distressing lol.

Out of all the symptoms of IBS for me the bloating has always been the worst part of it, even now as I'm older it's still the bit I hate the most, I can have an absolutely flat stomach one day and not over eat and be blown up the next, if I'm honest I can get a better result if I watch what I eat, this can take at least 8/10 to show some improvement but I cannot cheat, it's a no extra salt and very low bread intake, I have to drink lots of water and I have stopped caffeine, I missed lots of things at first but I'm getting there but patience is a must.

    Exercise help as well

You may be taking too much water.  2 litres seems rather a lot and could be causing bloating. I would significantly reduce your intake of water and see if that stops the bloating. You also may be reacting to your new diet which may take time to resolve.  Diet change can upset your gut at first.  Some vegetables can also cause gassiness such as broccoli, cabbage and brussels sprouts. I don’t take much water and I have IBS and feel completely fine.

Some people take maasive amounts of water and it helps them, but others find it causes more problems. As we are all different, the amount of water we need in are diet will vary from person to person. There is no one size fits all with IBS.  Do you find peppermint helps you? It can cause heartburn, so watch out for that.  It may be worth while coming off peppermint to see if that helps and try an antispasmodic such as Buscopan instead which is very mild.

Hi pippa I drink that as advised by my gp but been taking juice plus to wondering if that’s the main culprit lol as they have many different veggies in. Peppermint does give me heartburn a little I can put up with it goes after I drink some water x

My GP advised me to cut out oranges and it made me worse. Sometimes they can get it wrong.  Taking a lot of water can bloat you.  I would cut down on the water to see if it helps.  You can always increase it again if it isn’t the culprit.  It won’t do any harm to do this to work out the cause.  I wouldn’t put up with peppermint giving you heartburn; if something is causing you a reaction you should avoid it even if it is only a small one. It is not good for acid to be burning your stomach even for a short time.  My brother, who is a doctor told me this. I have read that peppermint should be avoided if it triggers heartburn.  I have chronic heartburn and I avoid anything that triggers it, including peppermint.

Hi, that's IBS in a nutshell, you can do all the right things and still have all these problems, I've tried a multitude of different things, not eaten this and not eaten that, eaten the right stuff, if you ask me you tend to know what makes you a lot worse and that's it, things work and than they don't, I think the FODMAP DIET is about what best to eat, I don't think it means the stuff you can eat will help it just won't make you worse.

Hi, IBS in some ways seems like a sensitivity to eating, but you have to eat, but I think there is more involved, it

is just a weird irritating condition.

Hi Rebecca. i have colitis(under control with meds), bile acid malabsorption, fructose malabsorption, nightime reflux & ibs(diarrea dominent). my largest problem to control is the ibs.  i tried fodmap on advice of hospital dietician, but it was useless for me as 90% of the foods on the food list i cant tolerate.  most veg & leafy salad goes through me(comes out looking like it went in - undigested) & cant eat fruit due to the fructose problem & it causes my nighttime acid reflux to be worse. so on the advice again of the hosp dietician she suggested trying a simple low residue diet. this involves cutting out most fibre. so i have barely any veg just some mashed swede or well cooked broccoli i can digest properly. no fruit. & everything white - bread, pasta , rice, no porridge & there are only a couple of low fibre cereals i can eat. but this is much more successful for me than fodmap. i dont get that tightening belt feeling after eating & i can digest all the aforementioned properly. the dietician said that many people with ibs cant break down fibre properly so instead of making poo firmer, it actually caused diarrea/bloating due to inability to digest!!  i also dont eat anything fried - nothing. everything is baked, grilled, steamed or poached(eggs).   like someone else said here, fish & chips from chip shop & i'm nauseus, bloated plus reflux from dusk til dawn so its a nono.  if you get on with dairy that is a good inclusion to have in your diet as its a good source of proteing & most dairy reduces stomach acid & in turn will help reduce bloating. anything acidic will increase bloating. like pipp said there is no one size fits all - some people get on with fodmap, but from my experience its more the ibs (c) sufferers(with constipation as opposed to diarrea).  if you try any new kind of diet give it 3-4wks before you decide if its helping or not. hope this helps.x

p.s to compensate for the lack of vit c lost in my diet through no fruit or veg i take a daily vit c supplement of 1000mg daily in the form of ester c. ester c is a non acidic form vit c specially formulated to be gentle on the stomach available from most health shops or larger high street chemist. x

Stress causes bloating - really bad. Now I am drinking LemonAid, it helps since it's ginger, lemon and turmeric and other stuff too. You can maybe create your own concoction, try it warm. It helps.

Are you drinking cold water? Try warm water after you wake up and don't drink too much at one time. This can also stress your stomach. If you are okay with infused water - maybe try it with lemon. LemonAid sure helps too. Turmeric, ginger are all natural remedies after all.

Also, maybe you're stressed out lately?

Cut down your fruit intake to two pieces a day as the Low Fodmap Diet suggests.
