IBS symptoms in low FODMAP diet reintroduction period.

Hi guys,

Have any of you tried the low FODMAP diet? I have been on this diet for a while now and all my IBS symptoms have improved immensely. But while on a trip to Paris this past weekend I had to eat out and decided to get fries with ketchup. Now, for the last past three days I'm having signs of major abdominal discomfort along with what I believe to be severe constipation. Do you think the fructose in the ketchup has something to do with this? I haven't had any problems like this since I re-introduced fructose to my diet. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It could be the ingredients in the ketchup. One of my triggers is onions and I discovered, by experience, that some some brands of ketchup contain onions - a high Fodmap food.

Thank you for your reply! There's onions in ketchup? I was unaware of that. I am starting garlic this coming week if my symptoms are better. Then the next week will try onions...

Some ketchup brands include onions which can be an IBS trigger as well as tomatoes.

I think it could be the stress, it could be the tomatoes ot the fructose. The low fodmap diet works for me ask your dietitian or doctor to send you to see one.

Hi Sam, my dietician is the one who recommended I give the diet a go and everything has gone well up until these past couple days after I ate ketchup. I am also gluten intolerant so food seems to not agree with me at all.

Discomfort would be more likely to be onions or garlic in ketchup. Traveling often causes IBS flare ups though as food and meal timing are different

Thank you for your answer, I live in Holland so there's no time difference from here to France, so I'm assuming it's the ketchup that's causing my symptoms.
