IBS & the burps! Help needed!

Does anyone have any idea what I can do to help with my eating?  Nearly every time I eat a meal I struggle with gas and burps along with the usual IBS discomforts which I have previously documented on this forum.  I am following the Fodmap foods, do not have gluten, eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, drink plenty of water and take regular exercise.  I have small mouthfuls of food, chew thoroughly and take rests between each mouthful.  For example tonight’s meal was a chicken breast and jacket potato and I struggled to eat it because of the burping.

    Hi Richard,

I was going to suggest the Fodmaps diet 'till I saw you already follow it. Sorry to hear you are feeling so bad. I am afraid I cannot help though ... do you think perhaps that this could be more than IBS? Perhaps it would be worth checking out?

    All the best,

    Hi Richard,

I suffer from ulcerative colitus and find that peppermint tea works wonders with my gas, bloatness and digestion and have it routinely daily. Let us know how you get on and if you find something that works for you.

    All the best

There will be something you have missed. Probably something obvious. Compile a food diary for a few weeks and you should hopefully see a trend :-)

Have you had a definite diagnosis? Has the idea of acid reflux come up? In which case it has nothing to do with diet and you can eat anything you lilke and take a proton pump inhibitor to stop the symptoms.

I have the same problem. I take a Zantac before I eat and it helped relieve all the burping.

also eat slowly carful not to ingest air.

Richard I have the same problem and I have found out what's happening. Whilst in hospital for a hernia op recently I was fitted with a gastric bag.( tube into my stomach). For two days following my op I noticed the discharge from my stomach was a nice amber colour. My tummy was bloated but no pain or gas. On the third morning I noticed a small amount of bile (dark green) in the NG bag. I immediately started get gas building up ei belching and the pain. My experience from a similar incident a year previous told me that if a syringe was used to such on the NG tube it would releive these symptoms. The nurses did this and it worked. Ten minutes later more bile appeared in the bag. Instant gas and pain. This time the nurses refused to apply suction to the NG tube because of the small amount drawn off on the previous attempt. The gas and pain continued to build until I was screaming obscenities (not me). Nurses applied suction with a large syringe and removed about  1.5 cubic cm of bile. Gas and pain stopped. I couldn't understand how I could constantly burp. Here's what I think happens. I believe I have low stomach acid. ( I treat this with digestive enzymes that have betaine hcl in them). If I don't have the enzymes un digested food gasses off in the bowel and causes bloating. Constipation can also lock up the bowel and cause bloating. The pressure from the bloated bowel overcomes the lower stomach sphincter and bile forced into the stomach. This then reacts with the stomach acids to create the gas. Working on this theory when I felt gas starting to build for the third time I asked for a Zantac to suppress the stomach acid and it worked. Stopped gas and pain in about 10 min. I don't like taking the Zantac as antacids make my problem worse. But they do stop a reaction quickly. I work to avoid constipation. (No eggs ). Don't like taking tablets so if I do get constipated I use water in a home enema kit. No pain and cleared out within 15 min. (Water boiled for 15min and left to cool to slightly warm). I avoid food in the nightshade family and eat almost anything else. I do eat little and often because I have HH and don't wear tight clothing. (When I swapped my belt for braces it seamed to help with the gas. The belt probably increased pressure in abdomen.) hope this helps.

What a sensible intelligent person you are. Most people flouder around and ask everyone else to work things out for them. Makes a nice change to see someone taking responsibility for themselves and helping others.

Thanks for the nice comments. Had 40 years with wife with many health problems. My problems only just started (70 can't complain). My job was a machine health monitoring specialist. I used vibration analysis, oil analysis, thermography, performance and common sense to trouble shoot machinery problems. I applied these skills to discover my wife's allergy to milk 40 years ago.

As you say if you have common sense and you are not lazy you can apply this and solve a problem. Many are too lazy to do it. I often get people asking me to tell them all about natural supplements for arthritis or this or that when they could easily research it themselves. They think I will sit on the computer for hours researching it for them so they can have a nice day walking around the shops or watching tv all day instead. Logicall thinkers who are not lazy always end up sorting things better and quicker. Your wife is lucky to have you!

Hi. I'm 32 years old and have been told I have IBS-c been suffering for 5 years. I'm to young for this sad basically what ever I eat about 30 min later I get bloated and burp for hours until I goto bed I have found that food with gluten makes it worst. I had the celiac test and it came back negative. I have had about 10 different test done. I'm writing to you cause I have tried everything and your story sounds similar to mine. Do you have and suggestions for me.

      Thank you

Blake-your story sounds just like mine. I am 29 and I feel like I am way to young for this. Have you had any with coming up with a way to treat this? I feel like my doctors think I am crazy, so I am almost embarrassed to go back in there.

      Hi Blakec,

i cured my IBS years ago. I can safely say I no longer need to know where every restroom is when I go any place. Had IBS, And many others...

I eat lots and lots of yogurt with active probiotics. No fatty foods no alcohol and no sugar . Stay totally away from fast food to many chemicals in them. Many foods have lots of sugars and fats which can be very painful . Cereals with only fiber helps heal the intestines, after a few weeks my intesting have healed seen on ultra sound, and the IBS and stomach cramps are rare now, Also have gallbladder removed which added another level of treatment and recovery issues. Alkaline coconut wh milk helps and maintain a journal of foods that irritate the intestines. Celiac disease has gone away simply by avoiding certain foods, hornteas helped a lot to detour stomach cramps. These were so severe I would be doubled up in pain when one cup of green tea or hybiscus tea help . No flour sugars all these foods only in moderation. Especially fatty fried foods. Spicy foods can send my tummy into serious pain and warm milk controls that issue.

The way I see it in my experience milk or coconut milk, almond mild all carry protectant lectin to line the stomach and intestines. Also active probiotics in foods such as sourkraut, picketed eggs  etc. Kimchi and other fermented vegetables pack probiotics, which help populate and rebalance your gut flora. Studies show probiotics benefit everything from allergies to preventing dental caries to weight loss. One in The Journal of Nutrition, for instance, showed probiotics could protect against colon cancer. And a study in the journal Clinical Microbiology Reviews showed probiotics could reduce diarrhea and other intestinal problems. been a huge blessing in mu exo

Coffee is very much a acid drink even in small amounts try  with 100% fat in milk to lower the total acid intake and or add coconut milk as a chaser to nutrelize the acid in coffee.

I second the too young for this part!

I'm 19 and have had this for a year now. Honestly refreshing to see someone so young experiencing similar issues (unfortunate though, sorry you have to deal with it!).

I've also had many tests done, all with no results, just lots of gas and pain.

I've tried to eat paleo and avoid gluten but it didn't feel like it did anything. Not sure what else there is?

This may be an old thread but I joined Patient just so I could respond to Richard.  Everything you describe fits my own history and experience. For many years I did not realize that this condition of bloating pain, stomach gurgling, acid reflux and never stopping burping had a name called IBS. Lots of tests and specialists steered me in the direction of an acid-reduction protocol but only about a year ago I began to do my own research on the Internet. So I discovered IBS and Fodmap and all the things you describe. And the healing began. Stomach pain mostly subsided and reflux conditions improved.  But the burping continued. And then by happenstance I found a jar of psyllium husk left in our kitchen by our daughter when she was visiting. I read the label and decided to try a bit of it.  WOW!!  Within a week or two I became completely free of the burping and other lingering effects of IBS. And after 3-4 months of daily use I am now able to eat small amounts of most of the foods I have shunned - even tomato and onion!!! Pepper and spice are still no-nos, and I still overdose on fruit and veggies (which I like) but I feel so much better.  My theory is that the regularity (and comfort) of bowel evacuation has relieved gut pressure (no more bloating) which I believe was causing back-pressure in the alimentary canal resulting in burping and other reflux problems.

So that's my story. It's the first time I have shared it. Hope it proves to be useful to others who suffer such troublesome conditons. Best wishes to you Richard! And thank the Lord for psyllium!

I also would like to add that drinking coconut milk is alkaline not acid and help neutralize the acid stomach. Drinking water before meals and after meals helps . Drinking lemon in water in alkaline too. Not acid . Finding foods and drinks that are alkaline. Also milk has a Latin that is alkaline and yogurt too keeps the acid gumming in check. Soda water I half teaspoon soda helps me when very upset and hot teas green tea. Helps with cramps especially my favorite tummy cramp calmer is hybiscus it has special ingredients . The health benefits of hibiscus tea include relief from high blood pressure and high cholesterol, as well as digestive system, immune system, and inflammatory problems. It helps to cure liver disease and reduces the risk of cancer. It can also speed up the metabolism and help in healthy, gradual weight loss

and it tastes good and the warm fluid always calms the acid tummy.
