IBS - what worked for me - any other top tips?

Hi all,

I thought I would start this thread to a) get some tips on handling IBS and b) share what is working for me at the moment.

I've had IBS for a number of years but only recently worked out what it really was! If I am honest I thought it was pretty standard but apparently not! Mine is always worst in the morning and used to cause real issues, not just because of the embarrassment / pain but also being late for work etc!

Over the last few months I've made some changes to my lifestyle and it has really helped so I wanted to share and also see if anyone else had any top tips I could try.

So I have done the following...

1. Stopped eating fatty / greasy food - fry ups, chippies, dodgy pizzas are all gone!

2. Stopped any high caffeine drinks - luckily I never liked coffee so it wasn't hard to stop that but I've ditched the mid afternoon red bull in the office!

3. Stopped rushing in the morning as stress seemed to make everything worse - downside is it means getting up earlier and ironing the shirt the night before but it really helps.

4. Stopped eating really rich food like curry with sauces (if we get a takeaway with friends I just have dry meat and a roti! Boring but worth it)

5. Started drinking Aloe Vera Juice - a bit of an odd one I know but my girlfriend swore by it (to the point she now sells it!) it tastes rank but has made a huge impact on my overall 'health' when it comes to IBS. Would recommend that one as a top tip!

So those are mine. What else has worked for other people?

    Hey IBSsucks and Shirley,

Shirley - fried food definitely a no no for me too! One if the first things I dropped!

IBSsucks - aloe vera helped me with stomach churn and gasiness, also reduced the pain a lot. I've been drinking it for about 6 months now and it has definitely helped. My IBS effected me worst in the morning so I have a cup each night before bed and after about 3 months along with the other things I mentioned I felt 'normal' in the mornings. Obviously I still have to manage things - so still no dirty food - but really happy with how things are going.

Hi HappyMan, thanks so much for your comments re aloe Vera, I'm going to try it this weekend , won't try it during the week in case it doesn't agree with me and I'm in college so don't want to miss any days. Even though I'm on colofac I get bad nausea, it comes and goes but its such a horrible feeling. I also get pain in my lower right hand side which doc tells me is from ibs but I'm not convinced. It's great that aloev is working so well for u, do u take any meds now or in the past?

I was prescribed mintec by the doctors but all it did was make everything smell like mint haha! I have avoided taking medication as I don't like the idea of taking anything long term!

Apologies admin, I didn't know I couldn't put links. IBSsucks, I'll send you a message with the link of where I get mine. If you are going to give it a go it is best to start it at the weekend and only have a small amount. I think have about 120ml so maybe start with half? Warning as well - it does not taste nice!!

    i have post-infective ibs.

    i cannot handle greasy food.

i have to peal apples, no jacket potato skins, or sweetcorn or tomatoes... not even tomato ketchup

they say caffine is bad, i have been advised to cutt down but i am a coffee freak and cope worse with out my morning fix, have tried to cut down in the day tho

i also suffer with sickness a lot and struggle to keep tablets down so i have been taking kids calpol. which seems to work for headaches, and slight pain

i take wheatgerm powder, its rank but has lots of goodness in

im not a great believer in pills but i could not live without my amitriptyline

i have also just discovered a new relaxation and stress treatment. its alternative, called emotional freedom technique and helps you focus on eliminating stress and positively accepting problems

any one else got any thoughts?

    Hi,

A good way to start the day is with a large glass of warm water with nothing else in it. it acts to hydrate the

bowel. This means you "go" easier and at the right time instead of all the time and gets rid of the "not empty" feeling.

Aloe Vera definitely. My daughter has suffered with IBS for ever and has been taking Aloe Vera for a couple of years now. Definitely has helped with stomach pain and bloating. Holland & Barrett added to juice in the evening.

In the initial days of having ibs, I used to have multiple problems like lower back pain while sleeping, insominia, multiple stools in a day, incomplete bowel passed feeling, some gas etc. I started using homoepathic medicine. For the first six months, I only saw a negligible improvement, started seeing noticible improvement after that. Currently I am in my 12th month of using homoepathic medicines, passing stools 1 or 2 times a day, lower back pain and insominia aren't there, but the gas problem increased. Satisfied0 with the treatment, I paid money for one more year, hope to see more improvements in the future. In addition to using the medicines, I also ensure that I only eat home food(curry(avoiding few like cabbage, beans, onion etc),rice, some curd), limited outside food(oats biscuits, packed food which is easily digestable like packed bhelpuri etc). I'm also ensuring that i don't eat spicy food at all, don't drink milk at all(instead having green tea two times a day). I will post my improvements in the future also if I find that I'm free from IBS, hope homoepathic medicine will help me.

I  had my ascending colon removed in 2008 following radiotherapy damage to my colon and bladder going back to 1972. I have found, quite by accident, that ibuprofen calms my gut down considerably. I used not to be able to have lunch and then leave the house for fear of an attack of the runs with the usual 5 second warning. I don't eat any breakfast and take one 200mg Ibuprofen, one 60mg codeine, 2 loperamide capsules and 2 creon capsules. Know find that I am likely to get through the day withoutconstant mishaps. Hope this is of use to a fellow sufferer
