Ice Pick Type Headaches Making Me Scared

Hi

This is my first post.

I suffer with severe health anxiety.

Last night i ended up at a&e with chest pain & shortness of breath and had been waking multiple times in the night thinking i was stopping breathing. ECG BP & Oxygen all normal and i was supposed to wait for an xray and my blood results with the doctor but so many people were coming in i had to leave as i started to panic.

Anyway, i went & stayed at my parents and had a great nights sleep.

Driving home this morning i got a weird sensation in the top/crown of my head that lasted a few seconds, i have had these before but not in multiples. They have been happening all day and im back to being frightened all over again. Its like a sharp spike into my head.

Does anyone have any advice or reassurance? I will be ringing the doctors on Tuesday when they reopen for a couple of things (another main one is to get back on my anxiety medication!)

Im so scared im going to die n its just me n my little boy at home n i dont want him to find me/wake up to find me. Its really distressing me.

Thanks for reading

Hi Jay. You are not going to die or go mad (two favorite thoughts that anxiety produces). You have anxiety. All this means is that you are nervously aroused. It is totally harmless but feels horrible. I can't tell you how many times I've been to A&E and I'm sure many others on this forum would say the same. There's nothing wrong with me and there is nothing wrong with you either. We are just caught in the grip of anxiety and believe every catastrophic thought that happens to pop into our head. None of it is true! You are actually okay. Anxiety is not an illness or a disease it is just a very uncomfortable natural state to be in and I feel for you. It feels terrible but it isn't! Nothing bad is going to happen to you apart from feeling anxious. By all means check things out with your doctor for reassurance and also take care of yourself. Cut out the caffeine and look on youtube for some anxiety meditations. They work really well. You will be okay, in fact you are okay but it's understandable if you don't believe that. Can you think back to how you felt when you were at your parents. It sounds like you were able to relax there. Think how you felt in your body when you were there. You just need to lower your nervous arousal so, be kind to yourself, have a warm bath if you can, occupy yourself with simple tasks, read a book, watch a relaxing film, do some meditation. You will be absolutely fine. Anxiety has never harmed anybody. Best Wishes xx

@athol91131 thank you for your reply. I have suffered with anxiety for many years. Health anxiety reared it's ugly head when i became a single mother 5 years ago.

I have also been to a&e / the doctors on many MANY occasions and it gets embarrassing.

These headaches are just so odd.

Ive ended up back at my parents to see if it would ease but it hasnt. In the last half hour it feels like my entire head has filled with pressure, as if a migraine is looming but all i can think is the worst possible scenario.

I went though a course of CBT last year which really worked for me. I dont think the holiday break has helped though as i like my routine so i have felt closed off, cabin fever if you like.

I just want to be able to ring the doctors for advice & to go back on my medication.

Im new as well on this forum and was looking for help with my own anxiety issues when i came across your post. I too suffered from ice pick headaches ...for months. Was checked out from head to toe with no explanation on what was going on till finally found a dr that referred me to a physical therapist who specialized in neck and head pain STRESS was the main culprit of the pain. It did finally go away, just took time. Hang in there

@michele94130 thank you so much for your reply. Very reassuring, and they are happening less frequently, although still frightening when they do happen!

Thankfully i managed to get in with an actual doctor today who has said much the same about it because ive been all wound up about various things.
