Iga nephropathy info please

Hi, I am 45 recently had a kidney biopsy and found out I have IgA Nephropathy and my GFR is 20. We don't know why because I'm not diabetic or have any other medical issues. My doctor never really explained it to me real well or told me what to expect. So far he has put me on Losartan 25mg, fish oil, and he wants me to start taking 50mg of Prednisone every other day, plus calcium and vitamin D. My questions are 1. Am I likely going to have to get a transplant or dialysis? If so, approximately when? 2. Should I refuse to take the Prednisone? I have read one horrifying story after another about that drug and I do not want to take it but I'm afraid my doctor will be mad. 3. Should I change my diet? I'm probably not thinking of questions I should be asking so if you have any additional information that could help me I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you

Hi. My son is just 22 years old and diagnosed 2 months ago with IgA. He is also at GFR of 20, but aside from BP medicine and a diet recommended by a visit to a Dietician, he is not on any meds at all - because to look at him you would NEVER know he has this serious kidney disease. His Consultant has said he will require dialysis or transplant in just 1-2 years time. Hard to take in or to believe when he has NO symptoms of being or feeling ill whatsoever. He is seemingly fit and looks in the peak of health. What a horrid, bizarre and cruel disease this is. He has had to turn down a promising career in the Police which was offered to him recently, ALL because of what the doctors are saying will happen to him in the “near future” - so they claim. It’s like we are all living on a time bomb wondering when he will suddenly become ill.  It makes no sense at all. I am sorry you are facing this too. I wish you well.

I’m so sorry about your son. I can sympathize with the time bomb. Hopefully it will be a long way away for all.

So sorry about your son. It's definitely not fair especially at that young age.
