Iliotibial band pain

I overdid exercising at PT this past Monday and have lots of pain and swelling in the muscle band and the tendon -- the iliotibial band -- that runs along the outside of the knee.

Has anyone experienced this? Please let me know if you have!

Keep ice on it and elevate it as much as possible.

Thank you jen! I also went to PT today where they gave me a great deep tissue massage, TENS therapy, gentle exercise with elevated legs and then a good 15 min icing.

Hopefully all of this gets me back on track.

Hi Kathleen, I have had long time IT band issues on both legs which existed way before my knee issues. And you are so right...lots of pain and swelling! My trainer gave me this very effective treatment to deaden the pain and help with the inflammation. You freeze water in a paper cup and peel the top edges back exposing the ice. Rub it with some pressure over the affected area. I do it a few times a day or as need when I have a flare up. Obviously, I'm not a professional, just telling you what worked for me. Hope this helps! Hi Kathleen,  The hardest thing to do is to really learn how much is enough.  Expect to experience some swelling after every workout and ice as soon as possible.  I also found that after icing putting on an elastic knee brace for compression is not only helpful in relieving swelling but feels good.  And finally I also tried Voltaren extra strength gave relief at the advice of Chico.  Hope this helps.

Thank you Ann! Compression after kingmaker sense. I have Voltarin topical gel so I'll try applying some. I've been taking Aleve which I don't care for as it's hard on my stomach but it does help. This injury stinks! I'm worried about dealing with this pain when I return to work on 8/28. Oh well. Thanks again!
