im a 38yr old female iv'e heard the word gout before but always associated it with old people. I went to the doctors today with a painful big toe which just came on over night, iv'e had that pain before but this time i thought yes i need to get it looked at, when the doctor told me "you have gout" i could'nt beleive it so i came home and looked it up on the internet. I then realised that its not just old people who get it, but with the pain im going through i really fill sorry for the older people who have it.

Being a long term gout or similar sufferer I can only advise three effective and one "for me "ineffective remedy. if it is Gout (get it confirmed with blood tests) then colchicine is the drug to treat it but if it is just an inflammation with an unknown cause then Naproxen is the thing to take, I found that the pain (oh what pain) was then main thing to treat and co codamol has been very effective. So make sure you have plenty of Colchicine, Naproxen and Co Codamol on hand because you don't want to be waiting for a doctors appointment when you are suddenly in agony. if it is regular and long term gout then you can take Allopruinol everyday for ever but this did nothing for me but increase the frequency and intensity of the attacks.

    Diet

I wish I knew what caused it but I have been a regular beer drinker and thought this was the cause but then I have had attacks when I have been off the beer and had no attack after heavy sessions of beer and wine.

Sea food such as mussels and oysters and red meat could be a cause but I have no proof.

I have struggled with arthritis in almost every joint in my body for over 35yrs. I am now 64. At times I couldn't walk at all, had to crawl to the bathroom. I went to the hospital to have insoles made for my shoes as I was told I had fallen arches [flat feet] It was then, abot 6-7yrs ago, that I was told I had gout. I was told that I had probably had it for many years but went untreated. The uric acid crystallizes in the joints if it's not treated soon enough, causing great pain. I am on Alopurinol now as well as other PK's. I now get regular flare ups but not as regular as before.
