Im not sure i should have been perscribed this?!!?!

I'm emetophobic and agrophobic with mildly obsessive behavioral patterns, i have been like this for almost 3 years although have been emetophobic all my life.

I recently decided to take up medication because since CBT i seem to have gotten worse! Now the doctor perscribed me this and requested i come back in a couple of weeks for a check up yet after taking the first tablet this morning i stupidly read the side effects...

i am now furious and beside myself with anxiety, what kind of doctor perscribes an emetophobic, pills that often cause vomiting and nausia! I now have no idea what to do... i will probably stop imediatly although i am desperate to get better so i can start living!

I suspect the docter as being a bit of a bitch actually since when i asked if there was a syrup type rather then pill (another problem i cant swallow tabs) she told me to grow up, im 19 and have to learn! obviously for 19 years i have just not been trying hard enough!

I don't think your doctor realise's how hard it is for you with this phobia. sad

I suppose we all need to confront our phobia's at sometime though, maybe now it's your time to try and deal with it (with support).

I've been on Serteraline for about a year and have never experienced sickness/nausea.The side effect don't happen to everyone, you might have no side effects at all.

If your doctor thinks you need this medication to get better than i suppose you'll have to take it.But try talking to your doctor again.

If you can't swallow tablets then crush them up in 2 spoons, put juice on the spoon and swallow it.The juice takes the taste away from the tablet and it's easy to swallow.I used to do that when i was wee.

    Good Luck

    Hey,

ya after a very long time reading all the threads on here also on another website i have decided to continue taking them. Alot of people have said that they found sertraline to be the best of all the others they had tried and also those who did have nausea as a side effect never where actually sick they just felt a bit yucky! hopefully it wont be much worse then i feel normally when i get anxious! Thanks for the advice i am deffinatly going to try really hard to keep going with it.

(yea this doctor is stupid  )

Have you had any side effects at all? and how long did they take to firstly appear then disappear?

I never had any side effects at all smile

I've been on countless different anti-depressants over 5 years and these are honestly the only ones that have made a huge difference.

Well Done on deciding to take them,i know it must be hard for you.

    Good Luck :D

Alot of GP`s can be very insensitive.

Sertraline has both anti depressant qualities, and is used in the treatment of panic, phobias and OCD (prob thats why uve been prescribed it)

Hopefully the nausea will pass. Unfortunately, the doc can`t look into the future and know that this medication will cause you the nausea. Trial and error Im afraid.(That doesn`t make u feel better I know)

As Clare says, give them a go... smile

    Good Luck.

With regard to the suggestion to crush the tablets the instructions on our own drug information leaflet clearly say to swallow the tablet whole. I've asked for further advice from our lead 'Drugs' author and she has come back with [quote:1686eee0ba]The manufactuer's PIL (Patient Information Leaflet) for Lustral - sertraline (http://emc.medicines.org.uk/emc/industry/default.asp?page=displaydoc.asp&documentid=2362) clearly says to swallow the tablets whole with water and not to crush or chew them. This is because they are coated with a film which is there to protect the active medicine and/or to disguise the taste to make it more palatable.

Crushing film-coated tablets can make them unpleasant to take and can alter the amount or rate of the medicine absorbed which can make them clinically less effective. It also changes the preparation from a licensed preparation to one that is taken ‘off license’ and it is therefore not covered by the same guarantees of safety.

The better option for people who can’t swallow tablets is to return to their doctor to ask about an alternative (licensed) liquid preparation.[/quote:1686eee0ba] I hope that's helpful.

Thanks all of you smile hopefully i wont get the side effects too bad, i passed out this morning tho but i get used to that its not too bad so long as im home. yeah about the crushing i figured as they are slow release tebs its best to just swallow.. luckily they are small enough for me so ive had no problems. Im really gonna try stick with them as i have figured once roughly 3 weeks past your body gets used to em so its just like normal again! just gonna persvere. although i dont think my bf really understands how worried i am atm as he keeps going on about this weekend trip on saturday to meet his family that i really think i shouldnt go on. but yes i will keep taking em!
