Hi, had to reply to your post. I really feel for you. I am a UK expat living in Spain and suffered bleeding for close to 16 years before having the guts to get investigated.

Have you had a colonoscopy yet? The thought of that terrified me...the pure humiliation! However it was nowhere near as bad as I thought! Then the result that there was nothing more sinister than haemorroids and an op recommended to remove. The consultant told me that I might be bowel incontinent or unable to control wind and I freaked out...I was only 44! Anyway, my step father said that I'd suffered for long enough and had to take a chance so I did...never looked back! Day surgery and cooked dinner for family the next day....probably a bit ambitious as the day after was the worse day ever!!! Horrible pain!! But I improved every day and a week later we drove to Portugal for our holiday. My hubby was amazing, cleaning my wound every day twice a day but I am oh so glad that I went ahead.

Everybody has a different story sweetie, thankfully mine is positive and I hope that it helps, please get in touch if you want any more help x good luck x

Hey thanks and no I haven't had anything done yet just seen my doc who I got results from today he has sent a referral to the hospital and he said they will contact me in about three weeks and will do an operation which is making so nervous he said if I haven't heard from them then go back to see him in four weeks to have my iron levels checked as they are at nine atm and he is worried they will drop further due to blood loss luckily my periods have started coming late like every 2 months or I'm not sure where my levels would be now

Maybe they will try injections first which are also fine x

Yeah maybe my doc didn't give me anything yet to build up iron cause he said it will just be lost with the bleeding so there is no point but I'm hoping they don't drop any lower in the next month cause I feel terrible he also gave me daily suppository's which I will have to use even though I don't want too I'm hoping if I take them it will all go away in the next 3 weeks before the appointment about the operation the whole thing makes me sick to the stomach and is adding to my already low feeling of anxiety and ill feelings from the iron loss

Hello Ausfem , there are quite a few different procedures you could be getting to treat your haemorrhoids . I wouldnt be too surpried if they tried some of the easier options first such as halo or THD . Both of these only give a mild discomfort for a few days afterwards , and to be honest I never even took pain killers after I had those , and I have had three of those procedures done . Even if it does happen to be the full haemorrhoidectomy , not everyone has hard time with it .

That's true sorebutt I was offered infections and banding which neither worked that's why I had the full opp

Hi Maria , I dont think many people have success with bandings , and I'm not sure why they still do them , unless they are in conjunction with something else . There also seems to be a couple of differences in the THD operation , and I have a feeling that most people are getting the basic version . There is a video on you tube , where they do the THD but then they add another 6 or 7 stitches further down , once done they then pull the stitches up , and it pulls the prolapsed parts back into place . I think that part is called pexi . Its definately something I am going to bring up on Monday when i go back in .

Thanks for your response glad to see that it isn't as bad for everyone xo

I didn't or wasn't offered the THD here in the UK so had to have full surgery x x

I don't no think they do that in other countries but not sure in the UK

Hi Ausfem , there are a few very similar procedures , all with slightly different names . But basically , they insert a tube with a hole in the side of it , they then use an ultrasound to trace the arteries that supply the haemorrhoids . Once found they use the hole in the side of the insertion tube to insert a device that stitches off the arteries , cutting off the supply of blood to the haemorrhoids . The idea is that they will die and drop off . Usually they will track down up to 7 arteries during one procedure . Hope that helps .

Hi maria , for a long time we could only get these procedures in the UK by going private ( to HALO clinics etc ). I had pushed to get the procedure done on the NHS , long before they approved it in the NHS . I was told when I got my first one , that i was the first person to get it on the NHS , and that a person from the manufacturer of the equipment was going to be present during my procedure , to assist the surgeon on his first surgery . I found it a little bit unbelievable for me to be first , but was assured so .
