Immunity while on Pred!

Posted , 7 users are following.

Have been on pred nearly 6 years now, (10mg) I hadn`t had too many colds etc until last December, when I developed pneumonia....had to take two lots of anti-biotics, not an experience I want to repeat......now on them again for another reason....(doctor didn`t want to take a chance with Lyme disease after possible tick bite!)

My question is do any of you boost your immune system in any way?

I cook fresh food from scratch....fruit/veg/salads/meat etc.....but am quite worried about infections coming my way this winter!......

All suggestions welcome thank you......

I can`t tolerate medication, have many side affects from pred, this applies to "natural" remedies as well, in lots of cases.....I add turmeric to rice etc,, but have to rely mostly on fresh foods .....today mackeral/salad for lunch,  chicken this evening with roasted veg.....but I do allow myself 2 squares of dark chocolate every evening, I would fight anyone trying to stop me!  but then I don`t drink alchohol......hey-ho....

Dark chocolate is good for you.  No excuses or apologies needed!  For example, this from authority nutrition

Dark chocolate is loaded with nutrients that can positively affect your health.

Made from the seed of the cocoa tree, it is one of the best sources of antioxidants on the planet.

Studies show that dark chocolate (not the sugary crap) can improve health and lower the risk of heart disease.

Hi, I wear a mask when I have a hospital or Dr appointment. I find why take the chance while on Preds our immune system is down. I find some people in these places just don't care, they cough all over the place not covering their mouths, I learnt the hard way. I also carry medicated wash in my bag and use it when I get to my car. Excessive? maybe...

I sounds like with your diet etc you are doinf all the right things:  Good Luck

Think you have it right Dea.....who cares if it`s excessive, it never shocks me how disgusting some people can be in public places.....

When I travel now, which is rarely, I bring little alcohol wipes with me and sterilize commonly touched surfaces - like the button on the back of the seat tray on an aeroplane, the armrest, light switches, remote controls etc.  In a friendly fashion if I'm travelling alone I offer a packet to my seatmate, and it breaks the ice as we chat about it. smile

I keep a package of sanitizer wipes in the car, when returning to the car from anyplace just wipe my hands!

I haven't gone that far.  Just want to avoid picking up new germs from all over the planet when in a plane, train or hotel. etc.

I feel that the PMR, that I have was caused by an intestinal virus that I pick up at either the supermarket or a pizza place. I just over the virus, woke up one morning and could not move my legs. Could not understand what was going on!

The flare came after a sore throat, now I was at critical point, just drop to 7 mg, but had to go up 30 mg to get relief. I may be over doing it, but it is easy to just wipe my hands when I get in my car!

I will say that I never got sick in the several years before PMR.  If it was caused by an infectious agent it must have been something latent in my body for years. I got PMR after a broken limb plus simultaneous and subsequent stressful events.

Anhaga, do you believe that PMR is caused by generic mutation and a virus, I do. The virus is latent waiting for it time to come active! If that is true we need to kill the virus, kill the virus!

Michdonn, I have no idea what causes PMR.  I'm inclined to believe that there is no single cause, particularly as there seems to be a range of reactions to treatment, and apparently several different journeys through the disease.  That would imply, I think, that there are several causes and not all of them need to be present in a particular individual.  I do know that my cousins on one side of my family also display a range of arthritic and inflammatory diseases, so the genetic component does seem present in our family.  But apart from a couple of years in early childhood we were raised in separate countries so it's unlikely, although not impossible, that we were exposed to the same viruses.

Anhaga, the funny thing is that nobody knows, but they have found that viruses can be passed from generation to generation even in a male's semen. I wish I could find that study right now. I feel the virus was in my body just waiting till my immune system was overloaded, then it got me. Currently eating a diet that will hopefully work on fighting the virus, which ever one it is and trying to stay as active as possible. With a smile on my face, ?

I inquired the older people in my Estonian branch and no one else remembered anything like this. I believe the stress of being near death in 2012 and perhaps a very low Vit D level started my downward cascade. It started with bilateral hips bursitis during that convalescence and progressed over the next couple of years to shoulders, knees etc. - and here I am.

I never felt really well after that severe illness( small bowel obstruction/dead bowel/ 11/2 ft removal/ heavy duty antibiotics, antifungals, total parenteral nutrition through special Pik line. You get the picture.

Yes I do karenjaninaz, but thank God you are here talking about it. My father's family all dead, most died at young age. My mother was an only child. I asked my brother if he goes back to Ireland, to ask in Village. But that smile on your face and move forward a little bit at a time. 🙂

Have you heard the interesting theory that viruses can arrive on Earth from outer space?  You may well be right that the thing affecting our immune system is lurking inside our body from birth, but it's just a potentiality, like so many other things in our physical being.  And who's to say that for x number of years that quality was not part of our health, and something else, nothing to do with viruses from our parents or from the air or from outer space, changed the balance in our body and we got sick.  Some people get sick in other ways, and certainly PMR seems to be the best of a bad lot!

Since getting this flare I have been trying to understand PMR. Many people think it is a virus is a latent virus. Okay with that I try to learn how this virus could get into our bodies. Now that is the scary part! From the food we eat, from our parents, from something we touch, the list goes on and on and! Okay what diseases do they know that viruses cause, the list is enormous, one virus the Epstein Barr cause over 60 know conditions. And there are so many different viruses causing so many conditions. But west medicine as not found cures that kills these virus. So now I try to learn about how diet may help to put these little buggers to sleep again.

My wife suffered for over 13 years with migraines, change of diet no migraines for 85 days. I will to give it a try! And I will keep reading and learn, with a smile on my face. 🙂

The viral theory is pretty much discounted as a single cause - but viral infections contribute to the overloading of the immune system and its breakdown.

And frankly - the only cure to not developing any illness is death before you get there. It's biology, the way nature works.
