Impacted Wisdom Tooth/Possible Dental Abscess

Hi there,

My bottom right wisdom tooth is definitely impacted. The pain is extremely severe. It hurts constantly but it is even more painful to swallow, chew, drink, and talk, even with the use of ibuprofen and acetaminophen. I'm also using topical benzocaine and that helps provide me some relief by deadening the area for about a hour. Without pain medication it's almost unbearable. Is it possible that I could also be developing an abscess or infection on top of the impaction? I have scheduled an appointment with an oral surgeon but the earliest they had available is over two weeks from now. Is there anything else I can do for my symptoms in the meantime?

That could be the case.  How long have you been experiencing the pain?  When have you become aware that your wisdom tooth is impacted?

Is the schedule you have with the Oral Surgeon for the procedure already? Or is it for consult?  I think, the surgeon will not do that right away (just an idea) maybe he will still prescribe you with preoperative medications to takefor several days which should make you feel better/less pain.

I suggest you call and say your concerns (ask if you can get a quick check of the offending tooth) - this is an urgent concern, for me, since it has been affecting already your speaking, chewing and swallowing.

Let me know how it goes😊

Thank you for your response. I have been feeling the pain for a week now. At first I thought I might have gotten food stuck around my tooth or that it had not fully erupted, but as the pain worsened I started looking online for answers and realized that it was almost a textbook case of impaction. The appointment with the oral surgeon is a consultation, not the operation itself. I am on a cancellation list so if somebody misses I'll be able to go in earlier, but until then I'm stuck.

Oh😞 I hope it gets fixed right away.   I know the pain because I experienced that when I was still in dental school awaiting for my licensure exam schedule. The dentist who checked me even joked about 'if it doesn't get done, I would have an excuse if I fail the exam' - so my parents were in panic and made sure it gets removed right away 😊
