Impending HoLEP

Posted , 12 users are following.

I am scheduled for HoLEP at St Albans City Hospital (UK) early in May.

Has anybody had this procedure done there? Any comments regarding results and recovery  would be appreciated.

Observations regarding HoLEP in general would also be welcome.

Thanks.

Try PAE or FLA first.  Minimally invasive.  HoLEP will give you sexual side effects, and potential complications.

I just had a PAE in Sydney. The doc said he succeeded in treating a 650mg prostate. PAE works better on large prostates. My GP said it didn't work on large ones.

Don't buy into the bull bleep. If the doc that is pushing the operation benefits financially get another opinion.

NHS doctors are salaried and also prefer not to operate to keep waiting lists down. The average waiting time for a first urology appointment at St Albans is 46 days. How would that suit Australian or American patients?

      650mg?? that is 0.65 of a gram

That is to bad.  Is your doctor going to try to avoid any of the area that will cause any sexual side effects or retro ejaculation.  Does he give you any hope.  There is a Dr. Muir in the UK that said it can be done if the doctor takes there time.  Or is that not a concern.  Doctor do not consider the male ejaculation a sexual function.  They feel that we don't need it after a certain age.  Good luck to you  Ken

Gordon Muir was one of the first two to use GL and that is still the one he does. A friend who had his done by him in 2004 was back seeing him recently and was told his symptoms were not yet bad enough for another procedure and to keep with Cialis.

Yes he is a nice guy had a talk with him on the phone and he sent be some papers that he wrote with a few other doctors.  He said that any procedure that is done even a TURP if the doctor takes his time to avoid certain area's you done't have to end up with retro.  He sent me a copy of it.  Was very interesting.  I wonder why more doctor don't do it that way.  Is it time or money.  We will never know  Ken

What he said to you is the same that I have quoted Tim Larner the other Top Man as saying when I went to see him, ,At first we thought that GL was an easy procedure but we soon leaned that it had to be done with more care and rake longer over.

Yes it seam to be.  But there are to many doctors that are in a rush to get it over and move on to the next  Have a good night  Ken

I was waiting for a bus last week and got talking (as I usually do ) to a middle aged Guy. He said that he had stopped driving as there are so many road works in the area and he was getting stressed by long delays on the main roads as well. I said and at your you're age you will soon be needing toilet breaks because of your prostate. I'm there now he said and I went to see a urologist last month.

I asked where and he said in Brighton. I said I hoped it was Mr Larner. He said it was and had been most impressed by him.

Thanks Ken. I am 74 years old, so not a serious consideration.

Big enough, had you previously been to a urologist ? Size is not always the main factor a friend with a 30grm prostate was having to self cath due to where it was pressing.

Hey David- Try calling Dr. K in Houston, just to get his opinion.... he has had great success with the FLA in the 'oversized' prostate dept.... Cheers- J

Thanks Jay but I have decided to go ahead with the HoLEP. Over the years I have seen 3 consultants, had 2 biopsies and an mpMRI. I just want to get it over with.

Good morning David.  Well you are the only one to decide that.  If you are sure and you trust your doctor to do what is right for you they that is that.  We all on here what the best for you.  I hope all goes well.  Will you be seeing the doctor before he does it.  Asked all your questions then.  After it will be to late.  God bless Ken
