Implant & Weight Gain.. Help???

Posted , 55 users are following.

I'm 24 and I am on my second Contraseptive Implant the first implant i had for 3 years never really caused any trouble I was stilll energetic,I manintianed a healthy weight and my mood swings were managebale... until the last few months, i expected this though as the implant was due to be renewed.

So I thought getting the implant for a second time would be a piece of cake (mmmm cake!)....Boy was I wrong!!!!!!

I had my second implant inserted 4 1/2 months ago and since then I have gained 24lb (10.8KG) no matter how much exercise or healthy eating i do the weight will not shift! I am constantly tired, my skin in spotty and dry, My sex drive...pfffft! what sex drive?? my hair is thining, my mood swings are ridiculous and because of this i hate myself.

I find it astonishing that such a small thing can make such an impact on my life.

I have been to the doctors and had a full MOT everything else internally is fine (apart from my weight) so my GP & I have both agreed that it is best that the impant be removed as it's the only possible cause of all of this..

How long will it take to get back to normal & lose weight once the implant is removed?

Has anyone else suffered with these side effects?

Will this weight ever go away (of course i will work hard)?

Am I a crazy chick?

Thanks in advance for any advice xxx

Hi, I have had 4 implants in throughout the years and my last one sent me mentally unstable. Similar to you I put on a lot of weight (3stone!) in only 8 months of having my implanon in. I became angemet, weepy, confrontational and has zero sex drive...a far cry from my usual self. I never even out the two together as I had never had problems previously until a friend made a comment about me never "being right" since I had it put in. I had it took out within a few days of realising. Within a week of having it removed the weight gain stopped, I felt back to my old self. The extra weight is slowly coming off but I'm so much happier. Hormones have a lot to answer for!

Hi, That is great news!  So glad that you are feeling alot better without it!  I hav been weighing myself weekly and have put on at least 1lb a week and this is with starting running and watching what I eat!  I feel very tired and bloated and uncomfortable in myself.  I have booked in my local clinic to have it removed on 24th June but I go away on holiday on 29th June and am worried that I will come on some sort of period by then but have you had no bleed yet at all? Are you still feeling better without it?  I am still unsure what to do as I need to be on something but not sure what??

      Thanks,

      Amanda x

I felt exactly the same as you and was gaining weight by the week even though I was really working hard to lose it. I've had no bleeding at all but for some people it happens within hours of having it removed. I feel amazing and will never go back to having another one x

      Hi,

Glad that you are doing better without.  I think I will get mine removed just need think about other options.  Or it might be best to have a break from things for now.  Have you lost anymore weight, do you feel less bloated and tired?

Thanks for all your help and advice with this.

Hi. I'm still feeling much better thanks, most of the side affects seem to have gone now. The weight loss stopped at 1 stone after 1 week and that was without doing anything. The second week I've not lost any but not gained either and to be honest I've been lazy and greedy, so I think a bit of work now and i should be able to lose weight as easily as I used to. Good luck with getting yours removed soon, I hope it makes you feel better x

Hi Sorry for taking so long to reply. How are you getting on without the implant now? My weight loss came to a hault after that initial drop but I still feel much better for having it removed. My period started yesterday, so it's been about a month since the implant was taken out.

Hope you are still feeling better for having it removed x

      Hi,

Its ok.  Thanks for staying in touch and for replying.  So its been two weeks today that I had my implant removed and I am feeling better, I loast about half a stone and now mine has slowed down but I do need to start watching what I eat better - I have now joined weight watchers and will continue with the running!  I still haven't had a period yet but as you have said it took a month for yours so will see how I get on.  I just want to get back into a routine with it all.  I am still feeling tired but that could be anything and maybe I need more vitamins etc and I do need to eat a bit healthier.  I do want to go back on some sort of contraception but will have a break for a bit.  Are you going to try anything else?  Glad that you are still feeling better x
