In a panic

Hello all,
I have had a hacking cough for approx 2 years but didn't really think abything of it. I quit smoking about 7.5 years ago. Around Aug/Sep time last year I started waking up with upper back pain and was coughing and wheezy all the time. After a few weeks of this I decided to go to the doctors to be on the safe side. I had a chest xray which came back clear and they gave me ventolin and presumed asthma. The hacking cough and wheeze continued with intermittent pains in my upper back and even my chest. I was subsequently given Qvar steroid inhaler also for mornings and evenings. I had a spirometry done in November. A week ago I saw the nurse practitioner and she happened to query my spirometry. She asked if there had been any follow ups done as I have COPD. Now, let me tell you folks, this scared me as this was what my mum passed away because of. My sister has also recently been diagnosed with COPD we are both going to be checked for A1AT deficiency. I am right now suffering again with another chest infection and the nurse practioner has dropped the bomb that I might have to have more xrays if the antibiotics and steroids don't work because it could be Fibrosis.

Hi Magnesium is not a proven and accepted treatment for coughing or copd. If you want to try it you do it at your own risk.
I hope you find some answers soon. If it is copd then unless you are severe it is very liveable with and you would probably have a normal lifespan. If fibrosis I don't know. Remember too that you are not your mother and treatments these days have moved on a lot. Most people now die with copd rather than from it. x

Hi g30rg313
Good you are being checked for A1AT.
Also getting further tests done is a good thing to keep a check on things.
If you have an ongoing infection though and need repeated anti biotics and steroids I would request that you be referred to a specialising respiratory consultant, your GP can refer you.
You will have more thorough testing on referral to a specialist but better to get a precise diagnosis so that you can be treated with the right medications.
I had a period last year when the ABs and steroids were not working I don't have Fibrosis, pneumonia takes a long time to recover from but chest infections you need to try and get on top of them quickly.
Best wishes for your ongoing tests and hope you are soon feeling much better.
