Incision hernia repair failure - going in for second surgery

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hello everyone,

I was involved in an accident nine weeks after I had keyhole surgery to repair a large incisional hernia (the result of an emergency appendectomy) and it has been confirmed that the repair has failed. I will be having a second (this time open) surgery to repair the hernia. It will be a year since I had the first surgery to repair the hernia.

Has anyone had a second incisional hernia repair? If so, can you tell me how long you were off work/recovery time and how painful the second surgery was in comparison to the first?

Thank you :-)

During your first hernia surgery did they implant a mesh?  My first hernia surgery after my appendix ruptured four months earlier did not include a mesh. Surgeon just sewed up the muscles.  My second hernia surgery took 5 hours. They went back through my center incesional scar to bring the gap together.  Then through 7 lapriscopic holes they implanted the large mesh. 3 days hospital stay and 2 months of bed rest. Total rest of the abs. Was getting better from the May 24. 2016 mesh surgery until mid August. Now it has been continually gotten worse. Now I have horrible back spasms.  I don't know if this is related. There are also worsening ab pain in spots.

I see my surgeon again this this week and will hopefully learn more.

      Hi,

Yes they did include a mesh. The first surgery was keyhole and took several hours. This time round they are going to open me up using my appendectomy scar. I've been told I should only be in hospital overnight.

I don't know if it will be the same for you but I also suffered back pain (and still do) which my surgeon told me was caused by the mesh.

Fingers crossed your surgeon is able to help you re. your back pain.

Thank you for letting me know your experience. I want to be as prepared as possible. When I had my first op I was originally told I'd be back at work within a week or two - but when I came round this changed to four weeks at home and a further two weeks on reduced hours.

      xx

Thanks you for your input. My second surgery was considerably worse than the first. Take care.  I hope all goes well for you.
