Incisional hernia- 2 Mondays ago

Posted , 2 users are following.

I am really concerned because it feels like the hernia is still there after having it repaired 2 weeks ago via mesh.

It actually feels bigger than it did before I went in to have it corrected.

I don't have any pain or anything, but I am really concerned that this is not normal. The post surg belly swelling has gone down, but now it is just localized to the hernia location.

Any ideas/thoughts would be helpful.

    Hi Mabro,

I also have recently had an incisional abdominal hernia repaired with mesh, at the beginning of December last year. My consultant warned me that it might seem that the hernia has not been repaired.

As far as I understand it the reason is that the mesh was placed sub fascia and covers the area of the hole in my abdominal muscle wall but, crucially, the hole in the abdominal wall itself remains. In other words, in my case, he did not suture together the muscles but placed a patch covering the hole to, a.) prevent my intestines from poking through and b.) to prevent the hole from getting any bigger. Thus if I examine the area I can feel a softness where the hernia was and I can feel the edges of the hole but my intestines are held in by the mesh patch. I believe that over time the mesh will be incorporated into the fascia and form scar tissue which will feel harder……. of course, I may have got that all wrong but that’s my understanding of the situation.

If you are in any doubt at all I would go straight back to the consultant now and ask him/her to examine you and to explain; it’s best done sooner rather than later.

    Hope that helps.

    Regards,

    Phil.
