Incisional hernia after open Cholecystectomy

anyone have any experience of mesh repair. i have a large incisional hernia following a open choly 18 months ago, the lump protruding through my muscle is the size of a grapefruit and the consaultant actually had the audacity to ask me if i wanted to bother with the op to repair it. he says it will be another open op as the same obsticals are still there and the lapro route is just not possible. as the incision is sub costal there is only one chance to repair it as there is limited tissue space to attatch the mesh to. i have been advised to loose weight (i am a size 14 in british sizing) as he considers me overweight at the moment and to go back for review in 3 months when they will reassess option of surgery. i woke up this morning feeling a freak - now i feel a fat freak!! i can understand losing a bit of weight can reduce the strain on the repair if it eventually done, but i dont class myself as being overwieght and certainally didn't expect to be told i wasn't a candidate for surgery at this time. anyway this is enough of my ranting - i really wanted to know if anyone had any experience of this type of proceedure -- when i had my choly i was booked in for a day case so by the time more major surgery had been performed i did not have time to worry about the proceedure, but going in for a open proceedure is beginning to worry me... will it be more painfull, will i have additional scars or will they open me along the origional site, how long will recovery take.... i had major wound healing problrms previously it took over 2 months for the incision to heal i dont want to spend as much time of sick as before.

UPDATE, i have my 3 month appointment on monday, i have lost wieght but you would not know it to look at me, the hernia has got bigger in all directions and while i weigh less all my clothes are tighter. i feel so old, even putting my socks on is difficult now. i am not looking forward to the appointment on monday - especially if it with the same registra as before as he was so horrible to me. i have had to wait 6 months from the time i was reffered by my doctor and have already been seen once yet i am still not on the waiting list yet so its still going to be ages till anything is done

it was ok i saw a different dr and she was really nice she said she had no problems putting me on the list (about 2-3 months) and she answeres all my questions without being horrible, not even interested in wieghing me.

it just makes me think that its a way of delaying me untill the new fincncial year!!

rang the consaultants secretary yesterday. she had my notes in frount of her and new exactly who i was and the proceedure i was waiting for - interestly enough i only gave my first name!! she said the admissions office had no right to tell me i wasn't listed - i was listed - last on the list estimated 2-3 months!! why cant i help thinking she was forwarned by admissions and had only just listed me eh! my origional referral was the beggining of september and i am still no further forward.

    keep waiting i suppose!

i have agreed to a medical trial on breathing tecnique - i am telling you now as i told my mum yesterday and she fully suports me (thought i would get a ear bashing) the trial consits of 3 groups + trial. i hoped to be in one of the test groups as i have researched he subject on line and know i can gain from it!! i went 3 days ago for lung function tests (they rang me at work prior to this and warned me that a bad function test would delay surgery - i said i would rather know before hand than my family be given bad news ... my boss took the call and listened in to my 1/2 of the converation and panicked!! took me time to calm him and explain!!). my lung function is v. good. i am in a test group and have to inhale through a contraption for 10 mins twice a day!! its hard work but 4 days into the trial i am finding i am getting better. the outcome is that i improve improve my lung capasity and ultimatly improve my aneseticac recovery time and my healing time (due to better cardio vasc performaence) i dont see i have any thing to loose for 20 mins a day..... even if i have to get upearlier!!

been to pre admission clinic today - all fine - it seems i will be under 2 consaultants, the one who did the origional op and knows the lie of the land and the one who generally deals with large hernia ops. (both will be in theater).. belt and braces or what!! feel better anyway. op on the 18th wish me luck.

it has been 2 weeks since my op and all seems to be going well. i was up and about 2 hours after ariving back on the ward, all be it slowly. and was out 2 days later, following 10 days at my mums i am back home. my wound is healing slowly (better than before) but they had to extend the scar by 4 cm's so i have a bigger scar than before. i am still very tierd and can not do as much as i had hoped - no vaccuming for 6 weeks apparently - and i have overstreached a bit getting a plate out the cupboard for lunch. must try not to stretch!

hopefully i will be back at work after the 18th following my 4 week follow up.
