the repair with mesh and open surgery was done April this year ...have been left with area of round swelling...about the same as the hernia swelling though a different shape...the hernia was more of a ridge...have resumed walking and cycling exercise...

My first repair was also open. My scar was also raised and swollen. I have a tendency toward keloids. It took years for it to shrink, it has been 5 years now.

Interesting question and I look forward to the answers. Mine was a large incisional hernia and was open surgery using a 'dinner sized plate' of mesh. About 18 months ago now. The surgeon said there would be a bulge and there is, but during follow up checks his opinion is that it is fat. I agree, as I can jiggle it around when standing - nothing like the hernia bulge. I am resigned to the fact that it will probably stay like that unless I lose a few kg's.

I do wear a corset during the day which is quite comfortable. I'm 90 ish kg and about 170 cm tall. Overweight and aged 70. (Sorry about the metric use if you're not used to it.)  I don't suppose this helps you much. It's very early days for you and I'm sure you will get some helpful advice. And keep asking questions of your specialist!

I did not have a lot of swelling, although my stomach area was puffed up a bit due to the fact that the surgeon had to inflate me in order to do the surgery.    It is not puffed up anymore.    In fact, with all of the weight that I lost, I am really skinny now.
