Increase in tenormin causing dizziness?

I am a 69 year old female who has suffered from a prolapse valve since 38 years old.  I have been on tenormin 25mg for over 25 years now.  Recently my blood pressure has been fluctuating greatly as well as my heart palpitations.  My doctor increased my tenormin to 50 mg (one 25mg tablet am and 1 25 mg tablet before bed).  I am still experiencing heart palpataions at times, as well as spiked high blood pressure readings.  however, the most dehibilitating thing of all is my contant dizziness, floating and overall "out of it" spacey feeling.  Does anyone relate?  Can an increase of tenormin cause these side effects, or am I suffering from something else.  When I visited the ENT, they ruled out vertigo.  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Could well be, Christine. These are indeed among the side-effects of Tenormin (atenolol). However, if you've been taking a lower dose of it for more than 25 years, it seems odd that it would suddenly start causing side-effects.

The obvious way to find out if it's the Tenormin or something else is to go back to taking one tablet a day instead of two and see whether the symptoms wear off after a few days.

Thank you so much for replying Lily. I actually did that as of yesterday .... Reduced to only one, and so far I feel a tad bit better!

Looks like you've solved the first part of the puzzle! Sounds as if the next step would be to revisit this with your cardiologist. I'm sure a solution will be found as there's a wide-range of beta-blockers and alternative types of drug available these days. I expect your doctor just thought Tenormin was a good place to start as it had suited you so well in the past.
