Margaret, only you know how you feel, the objective is to get the inflammation under control quickly not manner how much is necessary. Then back to 3 mg and stay at that level to you stabilize, then start the taper again. We all want off Prednisone, but you must keep the inflammation under control. Good luck you know the routine. Here's a 🙂

Hi Margaret, I am also on 3 and the pain slowly increased so I took 5 for 3 days then back to 3. Also on the day I was supposed to go to 2.5, I will stay on 3 for as long it takes for me to go to my normal level of pain and stiffness. I am glad I went to 5 for three days as it seems it might have been heading towards a flare.

    Hope this helps.

You shouldn't really be using pred as a painkiller - are you sure this is related to not enough pred? If you only take a higher dose for a day or two you can go straight back to your normal dose. But is there any point?

Though personally I can't see why you are being forced to reduce from a dose that is keeping you reasonably comfortable before you get the results of the MRI.
