Increased hypoglycemic episodes

I've always tested (and still test) in the normal range for my blood glucose levels but since I've been in peri, I noticed that I get hungrier a lot more and when I do, I get dizzy, weak, and sometimes shaky until I get something to eat.  Sometimes I really don't feel like eating (maybe tired?) but if it's been several hours since I last ate, my stomach definitely feels it and shows it by making the rest of me weak and dizzy.  Has anyone noticed changes with their metabolism, too?  It's like my blood sugar drops really low nowadays.

i went for about 6 weeks with no appetite.  sometimes the only reason i was eating was because if i didn't i knew i'd feel the weakness and dizziness.  i lost about 9 pounds.  in the last few days i've been craving my usual things, so maybe i'm returning to normal...however long that lasts... ??  i just hope i can contain my usual cravings: salt and sugars.  i read that if you crave salty things your body NEEDS salt, so have a cup of broth.  it works!  better than grabbing my favorite bag of Salt and Vinegar chips, lol!   not sure how to curb the sugar cravings.  any suggestions??

Hi Kirsti I'm the same not hungry at all although I have eaten a little this evening but not at all hungry but you have to eat don't you? Your idea of broth is a good one I had a little soup at lunchtime too. Don't want chocolate which is my absolute fave not at the most though. Got smile and carry on though. All the best to you.

That's me, too with no appetite.  But I don't want to lose any more weight.  I might start looking malnourished if I do.  Have you tried avocadoes? When I eat an avocado in the morning I don't seem to get hungry as easily. I sometimes add it into a protein shake and drink it for breakfast.  Holds me over at least an hour longer than a protein shake without avocado.

i've been thinking about adding more avocados (not in the form of guacamole, though, lol) into my diet.  into a smoothie sounds doable.  thanks for that!

OH yes myself I noticed my sugars are more in control for being a diabetic and my throid was at a normal range. Have had trouble with stomach issues and not wanting to eat much just what they recomend on an IBS and bland diet

Just out of interest: are you Diabetic?  I only ask as you self-test (my father-in-law was Type 2).

I've noticed a change in some of my symptoms this month:  think things are going a bit downhill for me again (shouldn't  moan, I did feel  a lot better for the past 3mths (Big Deal!!).

Just before I bled this month (yeah, still as bloody regular as clockwork at 54!!) I found I was really shaky when I got up. Such that I had to eat something really quickly (alright, I did grab for the chocolate over the banana that would have also done the trick!), and then eat something a bit more substantial (scrambled eggs I think). Only then did I stop the trembling.  I can only assume my blood sugar was a bit low, because the night previous I hadn't felt hungry, so didn't really eat after 6pm-ish.

That 'not eating'-thing is completely out of character for me:  I don't stop normally (hence the extra 9lb+ I've put on!).

I've been reading about a lot of ladies on here who talk about either losing their appetite or actually losing weight.  Sadly, unlike most of them, I've got a few pounds that I'd love to lose, whereas most of those posting are worried about their weight loss as they haven't got any surplus to shed.  I think someone's having a laugh at our expense, don't you?!

I don't really want to have that experience on a regular basis, so will try to eat on a 'little and often' basis when I feel I'm due On.

I just want to avoid the more sugary foods, as I know they're not the solution, and try to eat a bit more sensibly to avoid this.

You have 25 replies to your post, so I'll trawl through them:  clearly we're not the only one's suffering with this?!!

Thanks for your response...no, I have not been diagnosed with diabetes, although it does run in my family.  At my GP appt two weeks ago, I mentioned my symptoms and they checked my blood sugar.  In fact, twice last year I even went to my gyn office as well (with other symptoms) and they also checked my blood sugar.  It is always coming up normal???  I have seen the results and the non-fasting blood sugar is normal, but on the low end so I suspect I'm having blood sugar crashes that just happen to come more often in this darn perimenopause.

Do you eat on time, and do you eat snaks. Try to keep food on you and some ginger ale water, gatorade when you are out of the house thats what I do I need to eat a little at a time and when I am out of the house I take crakers, ginger ale, and apple sauce with my or a toasted bagel

Maybe this will help you keep from getting light headed and feeling faint

Thanks for the suggestions. I keep crackers with me all the time but I get tired of the same thing everyday when I have to eat so often. I tried cottage cheese today at 2 pm and it seemed to stave off dizzying hunger spells coz I was able yo make it to 7 pm without getting the usual symptoms, other than stomach starting to grumble.

I wonder what is good for morning breakfast though. I tried making whey protein shakes and add fruits to it but I find it holds m eonly for 2-3 hours and then I need more food.

I hate to say it, or even compare it to my 19st 'bear' of a husband, but if he doesn't eat regular, he sorta goes into 'one':  moany, wanting food now, can't cook it quick enough etc.  Then, once he's eaten, he returns to the teddy bear he really islol!  Mind you, he weight trains 4 days a week, eats me out of house and home generally, but is a big guy who's pretty fit for 53.

Also our son (who also weight trains:  imagine our food bills!!) doesn't eat anything after his Lunch at 1pm until he gets home at 6pm......then he just doesn't stop!!  I did suggest that he eat something around 3.30-4pm to stop him doing this, but he assures me this is his busiest time at work, and cannot possibly stop to eat, say, a banana and an apple.  Yeah, and the world would stop if he actually did try this?!!

He does see my logic of eating a bit more 'little and often', but I think men are a completely........different species when it comes to food!!lol

Seriously, I just wonder if you need to eat something small in between that 5hr gap:  seems a long time to go without and might be making you a little light headed? Also, how do you eat so late - if I eat after that time, I just cannot sleepsad!

Oh, who'd be a Peri woman??!!!

PS - Oh, and the 'breakfast' thing:  I believe protein based meals fill you for longer. Fancy scrambled eggs at all? x

      hiya

Not bad, all things considered. Actually had a 'bounce' on my rebounder trampette in an attempt to get my sorry a*se back into gear!

Ha! Dippy Egg!  My husband would vouch for me not being very successful with those: either hard as bullets or snotty - uurghhh!

I'll stick to the scrambled, they're supposed to look that unappetisinglol!

Seriously, I'm trying to cut back on bread as it's convenience is probably its biggest appeal.  Not white:  the more wholemeal/seeded/denser the better. But I do find that if I cut back on that, Diet Coke and crisps (my downfall), my 'top' belly (yeah, mine comes in two sections!!) goes down a bit.  I've given up on my 'bottom' belly:  that's going nowhere without the aid of a scalpel!!

If you feel a bit low: just imagine me on that trampette:  what a sight!!lolGood day to you too
