Increasing to 100mg after 2 weeks?

Hi all.

I have been on sertraline in the past for anxiety and depression. Most recently and up until earlier this year I was on 150mg. I somehow kept forgetting to???? take it because I was feeling better etc, until I wasn't taking it all.

Of course the depression and anxiety have returned with a vengeance.

I have been on 50mg for just over two weeks. The side effects have been pretty nasty, dizziness, diahrea, nausea and loss of appetite. I just want to feel better as soon as possible, and I'm pretty sure that I need to get back to at least 100mg until it will start doing anything for me.

My question is, am I being foolish wanting to increase my dose already? I know patience is key, but sitting? on 50mg doesn't seem to make much sense when I don't think it will make a dent in my problems.

I've spoken to my doctor, and he rather unhelpfully said it's up to me.

I know you desperately want to get better as quick as possible but you really need to go up gradually if you don’t the side effects can be really quite horrible, you need to allow your brain to adjust in steps.   No ssri is a quick fix they all take time to get started up on.  X

I would recommend giving it at least 4 weeks for your body to adjust to the medicine again. I started on 50 for about 5 week, did 75 for a week and then 100 for 4 weeks. This week I'm doing 125 and then I'll move to 150 (the dose my doctor wants me on after my most recent visit). I found it easier from a side effect standpoint to set the baseline at 50 and then make moves of 25 mg at a time up to optimal dosage. This has helped mitigate most side effects aside from mild gastrointestinal stuff and a bit of foggyness the first couple days of the increase.

Hi this is my first time on setraline. I kinda done what your thinking about. I was on 50mg for 5 days, but i had very little or only mild side effects, so i thought, ill up it to 100mg, which i did, my side effects i was having didn't get any worse, its been 3 weeks now, 2 of which on the hundred, still fairly mild side effects, i have all of them, but not to any great degree, nothing i cant live with for the moment, i developed last night the insomnia, so that's a new one lol.

Anyway back to what you were saying, i uped mine without talking to my doc, but when i did tell him he said, that he was going to up my dose after the first week or two anyway, and the initial 50mg dose was really just to see if i would tolerate the drug. Im doing ok on it tho, but still waiting for side effects to diminish, i do feel slightly better emotionally tho, so it seams to be slowly kicking in.

If you've been on it before you will know what to expect, my side effects didn't get any worse when i upped it, but you may be different,  When i done that, i figured, that after a few days on 100mg if i felt worse, i would just go back to the 50mg, Im certainly not saying you should do that, cos it probably was a bit stupid of me to do it without talking to my doc, but luckily i was fine. I feel if your doctor is ok with it and you are too, then its up to you. But if your having bad side effect already i would maybe think of just staying on the 50mg for another week or so. as the 100mg might just make you feel worse.

Just my story and my thoughts about it, don't know if it helps? I hope your feeling better soon.

    All the best G

My doctor started me on 25 and increased every 2 weeks by 25. I didn't get any real relief until 100mg. You can tell when it's time to increase from a low dose. You'll have an improvement and then a slow decline to feeling worse. In my opinion based on your post, sitting on a low dose will not make you feel better by waiting a long time. You already know 150mg worked before so if I were you I would get back to that as quickly as I could.

If your doc is saidbits up to you then go for it and get the side affects out of the way as soon as you can, my understanding it that the gradual increase is to see how that dose works for you but your doctor has agreed 100 is right for you. The side affects are likely to be harsher though could you start on 50 for 2 weeks then 75 for a week then 100. ? I think you will just have to try and see how you get on and if you can ride out the side affects until your body get used to it again xxd
