Indigestion

Have had PMR for 3 years now, currently taking 8.5 preds, trying to reduce on the method as suggested on forum. Have had various side effects as most of the PMR sufferers are familiar with. Currently I am suffering from indigestion have been prescribed Omeprazole which certainly clears up the digestive problem but gives me a very chesty feeling, I can't think of another way to describe the feeling in my chest, it worsened over a period of weeks, I have stopped taking them and the feeling has lessened I have been taking gaviscon which works quite well but find I have to take them quite often. I discovered from the forum the idea of taking lemon juice.... I looked into this and liked the idea.  This morning I tried lemon juice for the first time.......I have not had the chesty feeling all day, the indigestion has virtually gone.

i knew some of the forum members have used this method, with success.

How do you prepare the lemon juice?  When do you take it and how much?  I've heard of vinegar for the same reason but have never tried.  I'm on omeprazole twice a day.  Would love to try something different.  Lemon juice sounds so nice.  I have recently been told that although lemons are acidic, it is not acidic to our systems.

I don't drink coffee  and sometimes get fed up with tea which was my reason for trying the lemon and honey. It gives it an extra zip if you steep it with a teaspoon of grated ginger top up with hot water and strain when you're ready to drink.

Hi hindigs, I read about it on the internet its a tablespoon lemon juice with 800 ml water, in the morning 30 mins before you eat. With s straw because lemon can do harm to the enamel on teeth...

If you're taking two of the omeprazole then you need to switch to Nexium. Nexium is the strongest one of the over-the-counter stomach medicines. But of course try the lemon juice first hopefully that helps and you can get rid of a drug in your body.

Hello, yes I squeeze lemon juice daily, have it with hot water plus a spoonful of local honey if I have cold symptoms, I find I cope well with just one antacid such as omeprazole or lanzoprazole daily.

The breathlessness I thought was from the prednisolone, maybe I was wrong, or maybe both can cause it. But with the fluid retention of the pred I thought it more likely to effect the lungs too causing breathlessness.

Thanks for the input Adette it was the omeprazole that seemed to make matters worse, still willing to try the lemon also.

Ranitidine/Zantac is another option with fewer side effects than omeprazole.

    hi Tisser

I  amnot sure i can help.  I've not suffered from any digestionf rom Pred.  Iwas on very high dose before at 30mg.  I 've always taken my pred with / after breakfast, and it did not pose any problems.  I also find eating small quantities of food sometime help with the indigestion.  Steroid makes you feel 'hungry' . So I try to eat healthy snack in small amount only.  I ve cut down on carbohydrates, but ate a lot more vegetables , fruits (but less, as it has high fruit sugar) .  So, may be try small and frequent snacks and smaller meals.    good luck.

Like you I was on a high dose and it's only in the last 6 month the indigestion seems to have escalated, now on 8.5 and hopefully things will improve.  I also eat lots of veg and fresh fruit, I am not a snacker so it's a valid point, will give it a try.  Thanks Ling
