infection in the eye . .

Posted , 8 users are following.

I woke up yesterday to pain in my lower eyelid, which has now progressed to a lot of swelling half way down the cheek and discolouration of the skin . .Im wondering if I should start on antibiotics?  Ipve looked on  internet, and this sort of infection isusually a staph infection, and I know that is also usually the cuase of a knee joint infection . .  Probably over reacting, but what do you all think?

I think that you should get yourself down to the doctors and stop guessing what it might or might not be.

Good advice. . bad luck that they took the car in to the garage today to have it repaired, and we live at the top of a half mile 25 per cent hill! (4:1) I may call a taxi in the end. . . .

It sounds like a reaction to something (my dad has had swelling reactions to various tablets in the last couple of years), so best to get it checked out.

Actually off all tablets now. . think it is more likely an infection rolleyes

I have to agree with archemedes about going to the doctors.  Could possibly just be a bug bite but I wouldn't want to take any chances.  A taxi is much cheaper then the alternative.

Yes, I suppose you are right!  I think it is certainly a stye which has developed rather more than usual . . also getting very red cheeks recently, whilst I am always pale. . so perhaps time for a trip to the doc. . . Damn.would have to be Saturday!

You've convinced me. . . Fortunately, there's a private clinic about four miles from here, and hopefully there will be a doc there even though it's Saturday. Otherwise, it's about twenty miles to the nearest hospital or medical centre. . fingers crossed it will be open!

Rang my private insurance company, and they say that as it's the cheek as well as the lower eyelid, I should  go and see the doctor and get antibiotics , , cry  she did say that it was also VERY unikely to affect the knee, but that the situation with the eye was bad anough to need antibiotics anyway!  Usually I leave things alone for several days to see if they clear up on their own, and usually they do,  but perhaps better not in this case.

Oh absolutely doctors, needs clearing up. Shame to go back on more medicines but best to get it cleared up. Look after yourself.

    Hi

Good luck at the doc's. Isn't it just typical?  As we haven't got enough to contend with!

Sounds like a spider ite maybe?  W have tiny wee spiders here in France and they can give a nasty bite.

    Poor you.

Let us knowhow you get on

Back from the doc. . As I thought it is a stye or sty in the States I think?) which has caused quite a large infection so topical antibiotics for the eye, and oral ones to ensure it doesn't go any further!, plus have to bathe it twice daily with warm physiological fluid.  I look like a boxer at the moment!  it's now nearly closed, and going a delightful shade of red and the cheek is so swollen I can actually see it all the time!  Most annoying.  Relieved though to be on antibiotics. I know that an infection getting in to the knee is quite rare, but as we know only too well it can happen . .and as this is most likely a staph infection, better safe than sorry!  Thanks for pushing me to go to the doc everyone!

Well done and good you live in a place where you can roll up and see a Doc on a Saturday afternoon! Not even here in France is it that easy!

Glad it is not sinister and you will soon be on the mend

Only sunday afternoon is a problem here . .then you would have to go to Accident and Emergency and probably hang around for several hours before being seen . . . Mnd you, that's private medicine. . I probably could have gone to the local medical centre, but as I;ve got insurance it seemed quicker to go to the private one. . . People over here are always complaining about the medical service, and of course sometimes there are problems. . but in general, its pretty good.
