Inflamation of olp after fillings at the gum line.

I have had oral lichen planus for 7 years. It was diagnosed by an oral surgeon, but only by how it presented, he did not think a biopsy was necessary. I go to a dentist that has a few patients with olp and he has agreed that is what I have. My problem for now is this, after getting 2 gumline fillings of 2 bottom back teeth I now have an area under one of them that is surrounding the tooth on the gums that is red,or inflamed, moreso than the rest of my gums. It is a bit more sensitive in that spot. The filling is what seemed to start this flare and it is not going away. My dentist prescribed fluocinonide and It didn't help and he then refferd me to a peridontist who wants me to have a biopsy done to diagnose it as olp, athough he said he is 95% sure it is lichen planus and he wasn't alarmed by the spot. I am  just wondering if anyone else has had this happen. It has been 3 months since the teeth were filled. Thanks for any help!

Hi, I don't see the point of a biopsy, it's a lot of pain and stress, only to be told its OLP, and you already have your diagnosis!   I think it will likely go away on its own over time, which is what  usually happens with OLP,  flare ups occur, and then they go away.  However, three months is a long time, and it cannot be easy, but I think I would make an appointment to see a Homeopathist, and see if they can help.  If you Google Homeopathy and ORL there is a lot on the subject.  Also  take a close look at Curcuma (Turmeric) I have been reading some good reports about this spice!  you can buy Curcuma pills online.

Thanks for your reply! I am not into the pain and stress! I have actually tried to make a paste out of cucumin and put it on that spot for a few days to see what would happen, after reading up on that.  It was not any better, and being so sensitive to begin with I was afraid to make it worse, so I stopped. I get hearburn when I take turmeric or cucumin internally. I live in a small town and not a lot of options in the natural field, I am always reading up on natural help though. I have read that aloe vera gel helps some people, but have yet to find a gel , not juice, that you can apply in your mouth. Just found a toothpaste, gel, that has no flavor smile I have burning mouth, mostly toungue along with the olp.

Hi, the biopsy is used to check for cancer, as OLP can be an indicator of the latter. You do need it for that reason, moreso than for the diagnosis.

Yeah, I am checking into that. I didn't want to follow up with the peridonist as he had a terrible bedside manner, didn't once ask me if I had any questions, and I had a list of them. So I'm not sure where to begin. I am contacting my dentist tomorrow. I have lichen planus possibly in a couple other places I have been told, and the peridonist said I could go to a dermitologist. Do you know if a dermitologist would do a gum biopsy? Trying not to spend so much money of different specialists..

Mine was done by the maxilofacial specialist as that is where i was orignially referred. Now I have been diagnosed with vulval LP I see a dermatologist who has taken over the care for me for all of the LP. I'd see a dermatologist, they could organise biopsies, I guess.

SO far I have found that taking vitamin D , and avoiding nightshade family foods is making me feel a lot better.

Thanks so much for the info. Vey helpful. I also have vulval issues. My Gyn at first thought LS then when I told her I had OLP, she thought it may be LP. My symptoms weren't enough for her to biopsy, although I did have a biopsy done by another gyn years ago,and it came back non-specific inflamation. I am also dealing with alopecia areata. It has happened 3 times, and 2 times grown back. This time as it is growing back I am loosing hair in other spots. I have never had that looked at. My beautition has kept an eye on it. So a dermatologist may be a good idea. I take 3000 iu of D-3 right now. But I may have to try to cut out night shades and see if that helps. For me emu oil has helped to tame the vulva issues, certainly not healed it, but helped a lot. I use it twice a day.
