Inflamed stomach lining first now IBS. Need advice.

Hi

So to cut a long story short I have recently had a bout of gastritis after taking naproxen for a shoulder complaint. I only took 2 tablets but it was enough to cause damage to my stomach lining. Anyway, this has triggered anxiety which is the worst thing I have ever dealt with in my life. I have been struggling with it now for 3 weeks and have lost a lot of weight. Anyway, my doctors believe that I now have IBS as my stomach should of technically healed by now but I was still experiencing tummy issues and loose bowels. I have been prescribed mebeverine to help with this and it seems to have helped my tummy to calm down abit. I have had to do a stool sample and am waiting results. What I’m wondering is. Has anyone else ever been on this medication before. How long should I take it? ( until the symptoms go? ) or ( until I’ve finished the whole prescription? ) is it normal to feel a little sick between taking them? Or do you think that is just another symptom of my anxiety. Also if anyone has any tips on the type of diet I should be following now that’ll be great. I have no appetite anyway, but think it’s important that I get back to eating normal again soon. Many thanks

Mebeverine is an antispasmodic. You can either take it to relieve an abdominal cramp when you get one.

Or you can take it everyday to prevent cramps from happening.

I haven’t been experiencing cramping just been having very dull pain and gurgling. I was told to take one 20 minutes before each meal. She prescribed me it because of my persistent diarrhoea that wasn’t going.

Hi I was given mebeverine once as I recollect it made me worse or didn't help, I all so got peppermint capsules the enteric coated one's and seemed to help with stomach and intestinal cramps etc, check out the fodmap diet online tells you foods likely to be problematic, get some strong probiotics the full spectrum one's, Kefir is a strong probiotic drink, have you had a H-pylori test? or coeliac test?.

I’ve had blood work and it all came back fine. Just passed over a stool sample today. Not to sure what they are testing for though.

Stool tests can look for h pylori, paraaites and fecal calprotectin which checks for signs of IBD.

I’ve had IBS for years and struggled to find any relief. 3 weeks ago, the consultant sent me to a dietitian and I have been following the FODMAP diet. My symptoms have improved dramatically. I have also started on sertraline anti depressants for anxiety. That is taking its time to work but I think i’ am on the right path.

I have anxiety because I’ve become ill. It all started with a shoulder pain and milk wip lash. Then after taking the naproxen to help with that, all these stomach problems started happening. Last night I was feeling ok i pinched a few of my daughters crisps and then after dinner, which was only baked chicken, boiled potatoes and carrots I threw up all the acid in my stomach. Then this morning I had really bad diarrhoea again.  I don’t know what is going on. How can I all of a sudden get IBS this badly. My employer has sent me home because I’ve been so determined to get back to work and normal but my entire body is falling apart. Not only do I have a problem with my stomach now, but the shoulder pain is still an issue which I’m having physio for. Both of these problems together have really messed with my brain and the anxiety is horrendous at times. I have even been prescribed some diazepam for emergencies. I feel like I’m failing everything, because my body won’t recover. I mostly struggle with the thought that I won’t get better and my children will be affected by their originally happy, energetic and full of life Mum, being so un well that she can’t do the things she used to.

All of this from two tablets. They’ve triggered something that’s for sure. This is so unlike me to be this poorly.

I really hope I can get this anxiety under control without meds. But I think as long as I’m experiencing symptoms and pain that’s not going to happen.

If Mebeverine is helping you and it is not causing you side effects, then finish the course.  If you are feeling sick between doses, it may be they are disagreeing with you.  To test this out, stop taking them for a few days and if the nausea goes away, then it is likely, you are reacting to the medication.  If this is the case, discontinue it and ask your doctor for something else.  I was prescribed Mebeverine and got side effects minutes after swalkowing the first tablet.  It felt like swallowing a stone and it gave me severe indigestion, nausea and it made my contipation much worse. I tried them twice and got the same effects so I threw them out after four days and tried Buscopan instead which was much bwtter.  Mebeverine is known for bad effects and lot of people can't tolerate it.  However, IBS and anxiety can cause nausea too.  IBS and anxiety are strongly linked.

Try the Fodmap diet or a food diary.
