I suspect that it is the overall dryness that causes many of these problems, there is just not enough lubrication in the passages.  I have heard that there are various sprays etc that can help but, unless it is a continuous difficulty, I try to avoid any artificial aids and rely on water to help until the phase passes.

Pamela, you thinnk dryness could be the source of inflammation of several areas on the skin as well such as eyelids, nostril, cheek, chin...?

I was referring specifically to the question about digestion and thickness in the mucous but hydration is a key to many things.  The inflammation that you mention is typical of Sjogren's and it is worth bearing in mind that this condition makes us more likely to have a reaction to drugs or cosmetics.

Is it really so typical of Sjogren's? I haven't found such a phenomenon of inflammation in various parts of facial skin (eyelid, nostril, cheeck, chin, especially on 1 side of face) mentioned anywhere on the web....

Unfortunatel ymany of these immune conditions have similar symptoms and even the specialists in making a definite diagnosis.  I recently had cataract surgery and although they used preservative free drops, every part of my face has been affected more than ever before. At my post op it was suggested that I be referred back to ophthalmology for further tests.  I have learnt a lot more of the wider implications by joining BSSA.

The eyelids are puffy and very gritty.  The "butterfly" on the cheeks and nose very obvious but in a slightly different way, instead of a red rash that distinct pattern was swollen.  I had sores in the nose, the mouth is drier than ever and the lips are swollen more than I have experienced in the past.  These symptoms are gradually diminishing and I hope will settle down when I finish the antibiotic drops this week.

I seem to be sensitive to most medication, it appears to trigger my usually low level autoimmune conditions.
