Hello,

Just posting here out of desperation. I'm a 55 yr old male whos has been on allergy shots for 30 years. Guess they stopped working 6 years ago as I just woke up with clogged ears. The fatigue is so bad that some weeks lay in bed all day where my good weeks i'm able to stay up from morning to early afternoon and then I need go nap. Problem is naps are not refreshing...its constant brain fog and fatigue that I suffer from. Weird thing is I test negative here for allergies in phoenix. ive been best ent and allergists, balloon sinuplasty in ears(waste of money), acid reflux, all kings of tests, all types sublingual drops and allergy shots..etc. ......anybody else going thru this nightmare?

    Joe,

Have you tried some diet changes?  I am not much for those who go to the extreme in the diet realm; however, I do think there is something based upon my experiences.  I eliminated gluten for about a month and it didn't seem to make a difference.  I have; however, mostly eliminated dairy and I feel it has helped much.  Some say that gluten and dairy thicken mucus.  I was taking lots of whey protein along with other dairy like ice cream, yogurt, etc. I have not totally eliminated all dairy, but severely cut down and I think it has helped.  Most conventional doctors will tell you that is not the issue, but my experience is different.  I did run into one doctor years ago that suggested it, but I had forgotten.  So, eliminating a trigger food combined with exercise and lots of sleep have helped me immensely and I almost feel like I did prior to the really bad ETD that set in a little over two years ago.

There are so many different situations that may or may not cause ETD and solutions that may or may not work.  For me, I believe it is a problem draining fluid and mucus based upon my 45 years of cleft-palate related problems.  Everything in my nose, tubes, etc. is crooked, making drainage difficult.  So, anything that thickens the mucus makes it stay, build up, and exacerbate my ear drums, which were plagued with repeated infections for the first 25 years of my life.

I've tested negative for allergies.  Any fluids, steroid sprays, irrigation, whatever, that I spray up my nose make things worse, particularly the brain fog.  I've been to multiple ENTs, and I do not even have enough non-scarred tissue on my ear drums to allow insertion of tubes again.

Hope this helps.  This ETD really sucks, especially the brain fog.

I have this miserable disease as well. I had a Cholesteatoma from it ( google it if you don't know what it is) and had my entire ear drum and ear bones rebuilt. But the E-tube is still dysfunctional. I do have allergies, and I live here in Phx, so it is not just allergies but I think it is the bad air as well. Right now I am having difficulty, but I will admit it comes and goes. I am not much help to you I am sure, but its nice to know I am not alone. I hope you find relief.

I'm so sorry that you have this e/d as I've been to many ent's and md's.  There is again ringing and pain in my left ear.  My brain is a fog and I feel weak.I have had the nurses irrigate my ears before.  I'm dizzy too sometimes. Also have you had any problems with snoring and waking up coughing? Now I'm going to get tested for sleep apnea.  it's a nightmare alright! do you ever chat on the phone? email me back if you wish?
