Ingrown Townail for almost a year!!

Hello, I have an ingrown toenail for about 10-12 months now. It started off as a wart between my nail and side of tie. I have been to a specialist who told me he's doing nothing with it and told me to dry it out by letting air at it. This was 4 months ago and nothing has happened. I went to my normal doctor as it got infected. She gave me an antibiotic and it went. After around two weeks it has come back worse than ever. It has not been sore for months but has started again. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do?

Thanks,Jack

    Wart on side of toe**

Hi jack57270, the only permanent way to get rid of an ingrown nail is to let the nail grown out. In general, it is advisable to trim toe nails to a 'rectangular' shape and refrain from cutting them too short and rounded on eighter side.

Some people have a curved nail that is more likely to become ingrown. This can be corrected by wearing toe nail braces (fitted by a podiatrist) or in very bad cases by surgery or laser surgery.

I am assuming that the nail is pushing against the wart tissue causing the ingrown nail. The temptation is always to trim the nail further to reduce the pain but that will only cause it to become ingrown again in a few weeks time. Instead, try to gently lift the nail from the ingrown area (for example after a bath) and allow the nail to grow further.

Thanks for your reply, the specialist I went to told me to do exactly this. I haven't gotten the chance as I've been having a really stressful last few months..but I'm starting to do this now. Thanks, Jack
