Inguinal Hernia Repair- One Year On

Posted , 3 users are following.

51 y. male- I had a mesh repair a year ago, and it wasn't so bad except there seemed to be some trapped air under the patch. The doctor said it would probably resolve itself but it never has. A year on, the puffiness of the area troubles me a bit, and there is some pain now and then, not severe. Obviously no discoloration or I would have seen the doctor lickity split.

I have lower back pain as well so I have not been excercising as I should. I am not overweight. I would like to start Tai Chi and light weightlifting, as well as get back into hiking, but I'm not sure if this will harm the hernia area.

To be honest, I could care less about this amount of low-level pain as long as I fee it is safe and l I can become active again without worrying about my intensines!

Any thoughts, experiences?

I personally would suggest you see your doctor about having the ultrasound scan as this would show up any problems if there is any and would also give you that feeling of knowing it's safe to do the activaties that you enjoy doing.

keep me updated on your progress and good luck with everything.

    Darren.

Thanks Darren. Appreciated and noted. I do have a caveat however in that in forums so many things get dismissed out of hand into 'go see your doctor.' I do think that seeing the doctor and getting info is very important, but I'm curious as to what other people who have had this procedure know now, what facts and knowledge they have and what experiences they've had.

I live in China by the way, in case that makes any difference to anyone. I got the surgery done in Japan, so I can't go back to my original surgeon.

I'm not going to start pumping iron tomorrow without getting checked out, but just wanted to start up a thread.

I'd like to reitterate that if a bit of pain is all I have to live with in exchange for keeping my intestine inside where it belongs and not outside, it's well worth it.

Here goes, not had inguinal hernia repair but open mesh repair and abdominaplsty to repair an incisional hernia and damage to abdomen following 3 c sections and a laprotomy to repair a perforated bowel.

Here are some of the things I will never do again, lift weights, run, ride a bicycle or climb mountains.

Here is what I do to keep my weight down, watch what I eat, I have tried the paleo diet, (Mark Sissons well known exponent) which is very healthy way to keep weight down, they do reccommend weight training as the best form of exercise, (not for me I am afraid) not religious about the diet but  does help, I am 69 and a teacher of ballet, I work 4 evenings a week teaching and do a bit of demonstrating, somethings I can no longer do, but manage very well.  How about trying ballroom dancing instead of weight training, you will still need to work on your core, very important in dancing have fun and keep fit.  The next thing I want to add in to improve my health is walking, this is very good way to keep fit and healthy, in England we have walking groups maybe you have the same in China. All of the above gets you out and about, stimulates the mind and you socialise with others: good for the brain and your mental health, which you need to guard after any kind of surgery.  Life is good keep motivated and keep going.  Shirley dancer

I really miss cycling and moutain climbing, I guess light stuff would be OK. I was never a big weight lifter and not exactly eager to go back either. Just thought it could help tone. Dancing sounds like great fun. I'm also thinking of Tai Chi. Gotta do something! It seems to me that everything will be worse off if you let yourself go to flab.

Sorry to hear about all the surgery you've had.

Dancing is the best fun ever, you have such wonderful ballet dancers in China they are amazing check it out on utube then go and see if you can.  I have had Miss Agnes Huang a director of the Hong Kong ballet company come to England to examine my ballet  students as I am a Royal Academy od Dance teacher and we are an international organisation.  I tried Tai Chi and really enjoyed it so relaxing.  If you like the great outdoors then walking is good conditioning exercise and you can challenge yourself by going further and faster.  Hernia disease is ghastly I had no idea till I experienced it first hand, but the world is full of wonderful things to explore, and I will do my best to carry on exploring.
