Inhaling acid whilst asleep - Acid Reflux

Posted , 59 users are following.

Hi I have had acid reflux for 2 years and been on Lanzoprazole 30mg once a day as a PPI

I am 42, male and overweight

Recently I have had teh most frightening experience of waking up in teh middle of teh night choking and unable to breathe. It lasts about 60 seconds but feels like 10 minutes

The doctor says I could be inhaling acid whilst asleep.

Has anyone information or experience of this and know what can be done about it - its VERY scary.

Thank you very much

i have found that when i have a reasonably full stomach that can be expected to result in the inhalation of stomach acid that I can reduce possibility of it happening by laying on my left side. This seems to work similar to sitting up but is more comfortable.

i suspect that the way the stomach is oriented with respect to the esophagus is what helps to keep the acid in the stomach when laying on the left side of your body. This position seems to provide the stomach with more storage space available between its low spot and the entrance to the esophagus. Laying with your right shoulder down minimizes the available storage to a smaller section of the stomachCheckout a picture of the stomach and the esophagus - the part to the right of the esophagus has less volume than the part to the left of the esophagus (when looking at the body facing you - as most pictures show this system).

i suppose that some people may have a slightly different arrangement of their internal organs and some may have other conditions that may impact the effectiveness of this position. if it doesn't work, raising the stomach's outlet (sleeping with your head elevated - as recommended by most who responded to this issue suggested) may be the best non-drug solution . Although not very comfortable

    good luck

Hi. I had acid reflux for 5 years. Common treatment do not solve my problem. Ultimately, doctors tell me the root of your problem is nervous. I came to the psychiatrist and after treating different medications, I finally got treated with "Nortriptyline".

After two weeks of taking my recovery, I began to counteract.
