Innovative mobility aids and advice

Hello,

I can't believe I am the only one to experience this. I tore my achilles tendon and needed surgery to repair it. I was in a cast for 12 weeks and an orthopaedic boot for a further 12 weeks. I had horrendous problems coping with my crutches (i.e. got very sore wrists and hands from the pressure on the handles), keeping my cast dry when in the shower, generally getting about my home and generally trying to keep on top of everyday life. The hospital have me virtually no advice/tips to prepare myself on coping with this temporary restriction to my mobility. I'm 47 and live alone. Does anyone know of any websites that are a one-stop shop for advice and products that can help me make my life more comfortable with this injury? I live in the UK.

Thanks,

Ladykudos

    Hi,

My partner (48) tore his achillies on the 20 Sept and has only just found out he tore it 60%.  The hospital were no help what so ever.  It took until the first wk of November to get a scan to be able to tell us what he'd definitely done.  Was in cast at first, now in a boot.  It's a long old process for recovery I'm afraid.  Can anyone help you or could you ask for help?  Apparently it's not a good injury to get.  You'll never be 100% again, especially at your age.  Keep your chin up smile

Hey, don't dispair.. I'm 66 and popped my tendon 14 months ago and am walking pretty much ok .. I did a sponsored walk last month and did 9 miles so its not a life sentance. I too live alone, but had good help from neighbours and friends. Re the shower, google "limbo boot" ; they make great cast or air boot protectors for showering. Also "gell crutch grip"; i got the expensive ones and they make the NHS crutches bearable. Can't vouch for the other products though.
