Insomnia

Who has insomnia from these danm things? Day 1, 2, and 3 were bad but I got about 3 hours sleep on night 2 and 3. Night 4 and 5 I got about 3 hours sleep and then that was me for the night, wide awake and real tired. Each night, I wake and I am edgy, fidgety, and my mind is in overdrive to the point it is sometimes overbearing. Night 6 I got about 2 hours, and well, here I am tonight. Wide awake, but real tired, and just hainging out for some sleep. While on Fluox I got absolutely no sleep for weeks, apart from dozing here and there. But no side effects like what I have had with this, and it worked for my depression a treat. Anyone else having this? Is it an ongoing thing? I know I am only on week one and people tell me to wait but sleep is so important for every aspect of health, particularly mental health. So why does this med stop us from sleeping? Look forward to your reply. I will no doubt be awake. lol.

I was prescribed 10mg citalopram for anxiety a couple of months ago. I lasted 7 days before I stopped because of the side effects. 8 weeks later I still have terrible insomnia. Only getting an hour or so each night. When I do manage to fall asleep I get woken an hour later with a panic attack. Can't get back to sleep after that. I can't wait for it to stop

Yeah, I am not a fan so far. Especially since sleep is so important to our mental health and here we are, taking a drug that stops us sleeping. Oh well. Will give it the time suggested I guess. Bad enough I wake up and cant get back to sleep but to wake up and start panic or horrible thoughts is just not good.

If not already take your Cit in the evening about half an hour before bed

With my medications I split them up in two groups, those that act without causing me to go to sleep and the other group those who will help me sleep, just take your medications in the evening with a touch of milk and the others at breakfast time.

Let us know how you get on

Thanks. I am only on Cit. i have been told that it doesnt particularly matter when you take it, if you get insomnia as a side effect that is what you will get regardless. My friend was told by her doctor, and so was I to take it in the morning as we dont sleep well anyway. Taking it at night, he said, might make it worse. Hmmm. Different peopel, different effects I guess. Thanks.

I started taking 10mg of cit at night, I was awake for hours and feeling like I'd drunk caffeine so doc said to swap to taking in the morning. It never really made a difference. It gave me diarea too. After two months I gave up and another month in I'm sill sleeping far too lightly. Occasionally I'll take piriteze and it usually makes me sleep deeper but not always. I try practicing mindfulness to stop the anxiety about how I will cope tomorrow after no sleep. Maybe tonight I'll have a medicinal toddy, I don't want to get into a habit with that though.

Yes, insomnia drives me mad but I try not to get anxious about it for fear of making it worse. I'm 10 weeks in and have probably not slept more than 4 hrs a night , and that's a good night! Wake up nearly every hour some nights and past 3am often don't get back to sleep.

I will have to get back to work soon so will have another discussion with my GP about starting a small 10mg dose of amitriptyline which will also help with my bad back. I've refused up until now as I had to cope with the other citalopram side effects which aren't pleasant.

Has anyone else been taking amitriptyline alyson side citalopram, if so how has it worked out?

    Caro,

Are you prescribed any other medications to take with the Cit? I had the same problems but I am also prescribed lorazepam .5mg. I take that at night before bed and it helped me sleep through the night. If not then I recommend trying Zquill or melatonin.

The cit made me drowsy during the day and I had excessive yawning but couldn't sleep at night. The zquill helped me sleep but didn't leave me drowsy

Thanks for that. Can not afford to be tired at work. Today I swear I should not have even been behind a wheel so I cut my trip short and headed back home. Will consider asking my doc about it. Cheers.
